    Re: Elevator Trim Crank Handle

    Hi Hank,

First off, thanks for all your efforts to remain "authentic" - I really enjoy your discussions . Secondly, which escutcheon would you recommend? Part numbers A-48139-A, B or C? I have none on my two restoration airframes (one 1946, one 1948), so have nothing to compare against.

    Many thanks,
    Charles Flee

Thanks to everyone for your help. I just ordered a crank handle from Snyders.

The ones in both of my planes were not that fancy. Both planes had a plate that looked like it came from under the water handle in a bus stop restroom. The really cheap ones from a hardware store. The pre-war one had the remnants of it's Nickel plating and was mostly worn to exposed brass. The post war one was chrome plated.

          What?

Most of my domestic plumbing already looks like that!

Should I get a new plumber?

(Are you telling me that you wouldn't use my bathroom?)

This is the same Window Riser Handle that is used on my 1931 S/W Town Sedan Model A Part #30760 $11.55ea. from Brattons Antique Auto Parts 1- 800-255-1929. They are Die cast Chrome plated. They look the same as the picture that Hank posted. Hope this helps. George Bassett

                Re: Elevator Trim Crank Handle

I'll try to attach a picture of my new crank handle install. This is way better than the home-made handle I had previously.
Just for general information, I'll mention that the shaft is round the whole way. The handle actually has a square recessed portion that would fit a square shaft. But deeper is a round hole that fits the round shaft of my airplane. All of the torque is transmitted through a round pin. The hole for the pin in the shaft is just over 0.125". The hole for the pin in the handle was about 0.015" below that. I had a 0.125" pin. So I drilled out the pin hole in the new handle to 0.125".
