  • Paper Pilot Certificates

Disregard if you have a Plastic Pilot Certificate
I'm not sure if this is common knowledge or not.
If you have an old paper certificate it will expire at the end of March 2010 (61.19g). Getting a replacement is easy.

Hopefully this link will work. If not just go to FAA.Gov and navigate the buttons to
Airmen Certification. and then the botton of the FAQ's.

If you have a certificate. using your SSN no. as your certificate. no. there will be no charge to replace paper for plastic. If you did not use your SSN for your certificate no. there is a $2.00 fee.

I would imagine that there will be a rush in March so the earlier you go for the replacement the better.

I updated mine (to get the English Proficiency declaration) via the website 3 months ago...it took 10 days. Mark updated his 3 weeks ago and is still waiting, although his mechanic ticket came back in short order. Doc

I was checking the English Proficient endorsment. It sounds as if it will be included on the plastic certificates. This is only important if you fly outside the US.

              Re: Paper Pilot Certificates

I got mine in less than a week, just the other day.

It *does* matter, even if you don't fly outside the US. The paper ones are not valid after 3/10. This may be incorrect, but someone told me that if you don't get one before yours expires you have to *retest*!!!

Here is part of the long reference from the FAA:

AGENCY: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), DOT.

              ACTION: Final rule.
SUMMARY: The FAA is implementing changes to its airmen certification
and aircraft registration requirements. Two years after this rule
becomes effective, paper pilot certificates may no longer be used to
exercise piloting privileges. Five years after this rule becomes
effective, certain other paper airmen certificates, such as those of
flight engineers and mechanics, may no longer be used to exercise the
              privileges authorized by those certificates.

In my second post I meant the english proficieent endorsment.
At my airport its really a mixed back with over 1/2 not knowing they
need to replace the paper for plastic.

Correct there, but by the end of March we'll have government mandated universal English Proficiency...

                    Re: Paper Pilot Certificates

I hate to be cynical, but I recently sent the FAA a $6.00 check for a new Pilot's, Mechanic's and Flight Engineer certificates and received them in short order. I'm not complaining about the cost, BUT, I bet it cost them at least $20 to process my $6.00 check. It should be free or enough to cover the cost of processing. Remember, this is the same government that spends 1.7 cents to make every penny!!!!!!!

                      For what it is worth,
I tried to get a plastic, replacement ATP certificate using FAA website. The online application said it could not process my application. I sent in my $2 check and a paper application and got my new ticket about 5 weeks later.

Don't count on a quick turn around, although most folks seem to be getting faster service than I did.
                      Best Regards,
                      Mark Julicher

For what it's worth, the FAA website has worked fine for me. You do need to register and create a password, etc. and that's a bit of a hassle. Not having had any contact with the certification folks (new ratings, replacement certs, etc.) for years might cause a hiccup in the system. I imagine there's a point where someone actually has to manually type info into the computer. Once you're in there, it's easy-peasey. They process electronic payments quickly and seem to have a decent (within a couple weeks) turnaround time.

And rather conveniently, they put my picture on the back!
