  • Breather Modification

I recently downloaded an article about a modification to the crankcase vent tube elbow to reduce the amount of oil coming out of the breather tube. I can't remember where I got it from for the life of me. Anyway the article was entitled for the Continental C-85,C-90 and the O-200 engine. My question is; can I do this mod to my A-65?

NOTE: I just found the article at https://www.cessna120-140.org/forum/...eather_mod.pdf

    Re: Breather Modification

    Bob,

Yes, the same dimension works for the A65. I had one fitted for years to my A65 breather elbow, and it worked a treat. I have some doubt as to whether running the breather pipe over the top of the engine actually achieves anything, apart from running the moisture back into the engine.

The "whistle hole" mod to the breather is also worth doing if you're in cold, cold Alaska!

      Re: Breather Modification

Routing the hose up and over the engine solved 90% of my oil loss problem on the last T-craft I owned. If I had it to do over, I would solder the extension on the fitting and try that first, to avoid the water problem. However I would suspect the water problem is minimal because the air flowing out through the breather will take most of the water out.

        Re: Breather Modification

I'm reluctant to post this picture because someone might think they can just go to Menard's and buy a 1/4" x 3" brass nipple for $2 and solder it into the breather fitting instead of buying the $300 Continental part noted in the 120/140 link above. Someone might be tempted to use the $2 nipple, it fits perfectly and costs 15,000% less than the breather fix part from Continental. But, NO!, don't do it!
