  • Commuting to work

In the six months since becoming a full-time aircraft mechanic (unlicensed), I have been commuting to work on an irregular basis (weather depending).

It's about a 15 minute flight from Leicester, my home base, to Coventry where I do four days a week. On Thursday evenings, I always have a drink at the bar at Leicester, so to avoid the one-hour drive from Coventry to Leicester, I try to fly.

On this particular day, Coventry didn't open until 8am...it normally opens at 5am in the summer, so at 5 minutes to eight I was hovering near the CT NDB waiting for ATC to finish their breakfast.

When they said Coventry wasn't open, they meant that Coventry ATC wasn't open...they steadfastly refused to answer my calls until 8 on the dot. Work to rule or what?

Above: Upon satisfactory two-way communication, I was cleared straight to final for 23...

Above:...over the A46 which is my normal route (and really needs the attention of road planners).

Above: Short final, with a bit of wing-down and a bit of crab and a bit of diagonal landing in hand for the 15kt crosswind component

Above: Vacate at Kilo and I'm there.

    After work....

Above: I taxy out for power checks at the Kilo hold for a 23 departure,

Above: and crosswind, one can see the long-lamented crosswind runway...

Above: ...and turning downwind, direct track for Leicester (none of these HUGE circuits for me).

15 minutes later I was in the bar at Leicester, a journey that normally takes an hour by road. Great fun, but financially unfeasable as a regular commute to work.

    Re: Commuting to work

    Robert,

Thanks for the great pics. I see airport managers are the same in England as they are here. The only runway aligned with the 15kt wind, and they use it as a parking ramp.

Many is the time I have had to wait for a tower to open so that I could get a clearance. And yes, they don't answer the radio here one minute before the appointed hour either. Now that we have cell phones it is easier to call Flight Service to get a clearance. "we don't need no stinking tower".

Is it against the rules there to land before the tower is open? Here we would just announce our arrival and pattern on CTAF (common traffic advisory frequency) as if it were an uncontrolled field. It is usually the same freq as tower. I have been in the pattern at a controlled field when the moment came for the tower to open. The guy announced, "everyone in the pattern is cleared to land". He sounded like he had just woke up and had not had his coffee.

      Re: Commuting to work

Really interesting pics. I have lived in northern California so long that it looks strange to me to see green in the summer. Sure is pretty. Except for the planted fields here in the valley all is brown in the summer. Burns a lot too.

Had one of the best experiences of my flying life commuting about 60 miles to work every day for about two months. Was in a nice straight-tailed 172. Had all the bells and whistles and was a kick to fly on the return trip around 10 at night. Los Banos short-haul airline LOL.

'Had one of the best, least expensive, meals I ever had at a pub in Coventry about 15 years ago. I didn't get to the airport, but I love the pictures. 'Hope to get back there some day.

          Re: Commuting to work

Here in Canada many smaller airports are closing or the town that owns them are thinking what way. Coventry looks more like a industrial subdivision when an airport, with many different industrial acctiveties.
Looks like mine and others suggestion for land use is feasable in England, and it works in Canada as well.
We do have examples of it in Brantford ON.
Welland airport is now going to rezoned to Light industrial instead of what ever it is now, with surunding farmland also zoned light industrial. It means you can't build housing in the area witch will kill the airport in time with complains off all kinds. Being a WW2 training base the runways have large weight capasity for larger aircrafts, good to have for freight or medium charter operation.

            Rob,
All I can see in the pictures is the beautiful grass. The hell with the pavement, they should let you use the grass where all Taylorcrafts and other tail draggers really belong.

I do, but at £7 (reduced by 50% from the normal £14 because I have employment there), it's very reasonable (for the UK).
