  • Control Yoke U-Joint

Does anybody have a couple of u-joints for the control yolk? T-Rex has a little more slop than I would like in the wheel. They almost look like they could be made out of a piece of square tube. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can take out some slop by replaceing the worn AN bolts with NAS close tolerance bolts, but the best way to fix the problem is make new ones.

Every one I have seen looks to have been hand drilled and specific to its location/airplane.

Tell me about it! I took both wheels out of my 41 when I was working the instrument panel and had to rig the ailerons to figure out which wheel was for the pilot and passenger sides. Now if I need to remove the wheels I leave one universal to wheel shaft bolt in the plane and the other on the wheel shaft.
Seems like the square piece in the universal was cut from a standard piece of square steel tube too. At least getting rid of slop in that part was pretty easy. The shaft hole slop cleaned up when the shafts were re-plated and machined (make sure the plating shop does a Hydrogen embritlement relief IMMEDIATELY after removal from the plating tank! That means RIGHT NOW, not after 20 minutes! The plated parts should go from the plating tank to the wash tank and directly into the oven and be "cooked" for 24 hours at 350 to 400 degrees. If you wait to bake the part you can get cracks in the welds and drill holes. A wheel crack causing the wheel to fall off the shaft in flight could ruin a perfectly good pair of pants.)

It should be noted that a common mistake is to try and take out the slop by tightening the bolts, which just adds a lot of friction that is not needed and does not cure the slop!

Reaming and installing a NAS bolt would sure look attractive to me compared to welding up the holes or plating...

Tightening the bolts is a REALLY bad idea on the cross bolts. The ones going through the square tube should be able to be turned by hand. The plating on mine was on the wheel shaft, not the universal and wasn't done to close up the hole tolerance, that was just a nice side effect. The bolts through the wheel shaft actually pinches the shaft so they can be tightened some, but even they don't need to be crushed down. If the shaft moves with a snug bolt, the holes are probably bad.
