  • Mag ? A-65-8

Hello tribe, want to toss this out and see what your thoughts are.
My "garage furniture" (work in progress for 6 years) '46 Bc12 has the "non-repairable" Slick mags, and one mag was listed inop at the last annual.
Upon closer examination, I noticed the wires are oil soaked. (shielded).
Have thought about pulling it and making a test rig on a bench to spin it and check it out. These mags look quite similar to what was supplied on many tractors of similar vintage, and I have repaired some of those with great success.
I wonder, has anyone else out there done the same, or just swallowed hard and bought a new set?

    Thanks

You are of course going to use these repaired mags on the swamp boat in the garage with the T right? If so I would very much say to give the repair a try! The more of the repaired Mags that go to the Swamp Machines the more of the "good ones" there will be for our planes.
How do you tell a repaired mag from a good one. Well, the ones that work and check good at an annual are the good ones of course!

NONE of us would knowingly use an illegally repaired part on our planes, right? Those go to our Swamp Buggy friends.

I know very little about slicks, but if you can do it right, I suggest you do both of them. You may be glad when you see what is inside the "good" one.

Example: one of my Eisemann's was working perfect but when I opened it up one of the bearing (retainers?) was totally destroyed.

It just gives you a good comfy feeling when you know they are done correctly.

You might watch Ebay. I got two "refurbished" Slick mags for less than $500.00. I took them to a mag shop and had them inspected, tested and yellow tagged for $150.00. Both are working fine. A lot less expensive than buying new.

If the slick mags were model 4001 they were known as the "throw away" mags. They were to be ran for some number of hours then sent back to slick to be reworked. That mag as been discontunied and is no longer serviced by slick. I do not think slick will even accept them as a core.
