I fly out to Chicago in 12 hours time; I'll be at Brodhead in Mike Jones' Ol' Blue Taylorcraft from Thursday evening (US time) until Sunday, when I'll motor on up to Oshkosh.

I hope to fly up on 7/24 or 7/25, and plan to camp beside my Taylorcraft for the duration, until 8/2. I usually get parked in the South 40, well past the ultralights runway (last year I was in row 141!).

Please ring my cell phone 866-920-2316 if you'd like to come help buff wax on Sunday 7/26 in preparation for judging. (Although my wife won't drive up with the compensatory beer cooler until Monday afternoon.) Having won bronze Lindys the last two years (thanks to all your help!), I'm only eligible to compete for Classic Reserve or Grand Champion, so I'd welcome help with the last-minute airplane detailing. Yes, it involves Q-tips.

I hope to get a Tuesday morning judging appointment, if you're curious about watching that process. Last year, all 12 yellow-capped Vintage judges came together in a fleet of golf carts to grill me and pick over the plane and my restoration documentation notebook.

And please feel free to use my folding chairs if you need a seat and shade while you're walking the flightline. The South 40 is a quite spot from which to watch the afternoon airshow -- next to the Runway 36 threshold and out of earshot of the infernal flightline loudspeakers. My ship is Taylorcraft Ivory with AN Blue stripes. There is usually a sign-in sheet on the Taylorcraft table in the Type Club tent on which people note where their Taylorcrafts are parked on the field.

Hope to see everyone Wednesday 7/29 17:30-20:30 at the Vintage Aircraft Assoc. Annual Picnic at the Nature Center shelter C3 (buy your ticket in advance and catch the free shuttle tram at the Red Barn). I'll try to get there early with a Taylorcraft logo vertical sign to mark a table for us to congregate. I'll bring nametag stickers to help associate faces with forum names and aliases.

Looking forward to also seeing everyone on Thursday 7/30 13:00-14:15 at Forum Pavilion 3 for the "Care for your Taylorcraft" forum led by Steve Krog.

And if anyone with a vehicle needs a dining companion for real food in town, I'll gladly buy you drinks. Roughing it in a tent beside the plane, the dinner options from the flightline vendors leave something to be desired. (I have a one bratwurst per week limit.) Again, my cell phone is 866-920-2316. I am sure the word may have spread, we got four ships ready to go and then I hyper-extended my knee and have elected to stay home and watch the flow of ships going back and forth for fuel, sleep and advise. I truly miss going ; however I can now make Mentone for the Gyro plane meetings.

Well Joel, I will not be able to help you cleaning and prepping your ship for the judges this time around. Weather between Northern VA and OH has been very difficult to deal with when crossing WV into OH. We tried Saturday and Sunday several times on a VFR plan with out any luck; even yesterday around 1:00PM looked OK until we were informed of the t-storms in Indiana, Illinois and OH.... so that did it. Joel: good luck and bring back the trophy for all of us !!

Thanks also to Robbie in Fond Du Lac for "keeping the light on" for us as well as all his offers to accommodate the trip for us.

AW CRUD FORREST!! I hyper-extended both knees a few years back (advantage after BOTH knees are broken you don't limp any more! My wife says I walk like I did after a 7 month deployment in the Navy). Hurt like the dickens and really gave me a start to see my legs turned out 90 degrees in a direction they had never gone before!
I assume you got a GOOD knee brace, didn't you? Don't mess with those crappy Ace Bandage ones to start except for when you need to stabilize the knee while you are sitting with your leg up or you are in bed. If you bend the knee, they bunch up and hurt like H**L! The ones with the hinged metal side "arms" and the hole in the fabric for your knee cap are GREAT (but expensive).
You will survive! Keep your spirits up. You are too tough an old bird to give in to this. Even old, out of shape farts like me get around fine after the knee heals up (and I didn't get a knee replacement). I just hate to hear you will miss out on AirVenture.

I DO keep an Ace knee brace in the flight bag, "just in case" I blow one out away from home and have to "limp home".

You are the first to fully understand. I was in the immobilizer for about 6-8 weeks. Then I that is I found the great sports brace you describe with the stays in the side and all the good stuff that goes with expensive!
However it was great, then I got stupid and did not have it on when I slipped again. All is well, I just have to be careful. At least it does not rub the paint on the mororcyle like the full immobilizer used to do! We have had fun here, the Piets are stranded in Indiana; five 150 Cessna guys ended up just east of me at Salem for all today. STILL raining. thanks for the thoughts ... bye Forrest
