  • Harar STC -vs- Pre-War

In the Taylorcrafter Volume 1, Number 1 Feb. 2007 http://vb.taylorcraft.org/showthread.php?t=3941
    Forrest writes :
Interviews with Jack now tell us that he never intended to have the early “B” Models with 1150 Gross wt and 13 rib wings made eligible to jump directly to the 1280 or 1500 lb gross.
IF the early ”B” is modified to upgrade it to the 1200 lb Gross of the BC-12, BF-12 or BL-12 of 1941 , THEN the STC can be applied.
SOME copies of the STC out in the field have a penciled notation that it applies to “All “B” models. An interview with Bob Harer last month confirmed all this information. He is now explaining to any inquiries that the early “B” with 1150 Gross is not eligible as intended by Jack Gilberti or himself.
The STC is now issued to specific ser# airplanes.

    My questions:

    1) What is the actual current status of this STC? Has it been sold on? To whom does one apply?

    2) If the Harar STC does not apply to <1200# ships, which STC allows for the modification from B --> B12?

    3) Does there exist another STC (or series of STCs) for the installation of a C85 in a pre-war airplane?

    4) What are the concrete benefits to keeping a t-craft in the Standard Certification Category? Just nostalgia?

    Thanks.

    Re: Harar STC -vs- Pre-War

Replying to my own thread. ..

I've re-read What changes allowed 1100#-1150#-1200# started by Howard Wilson, and running three pages.

    The thread reaches no conclusion!

I will summarize the actual data here:
Specific callouts 1100-1150-1200 gross TCDS A-696

    II - Model BC-65, 2 PCLM, Approved July 22, 1939
Maximum Weight Landplane: 1100 lb. (S/N 1407 and up are eligible at 1150 lb.)

    III - Model BC12-65 (Army L-2H), 2 PCL-SM, Approved April 7, 1941
(Same as Model BC-65 except for minor structural changes and added elevator trim tab).

    Maximum Weight Landplane: 1200 lb.
Serial No. Eligible 2401, 2501, 2503, 2504, 2529 and up and all USAF numbers. Use manufacturers numbers if available.

Structural differences in the frame are shown in red in the included drawing (Mar 19, 1941 without reference to applicable serial #s).

Finally, from the last Foundation Newsletter posted here, I read (emphasis mine):
WE learned last Monday ; March 23rd, 2009 that the present owner of the Taylorcraft assets including ; Type Certificates , Drawings, FAA Approvals, jigs, tooling ,some equipment and parts was being offered to the Taylorcraft Foundation as a Donation. These are the assets that have been for sale in Brownsville, Tx.

I really must renew my membership, but its non-trivial from overseas. The EFT data would be helpful for us non-statesiders.

Maybe Forrest might have to hire some help to get it back to Alliance, or maybe some of us could help if it is donated. Tim

What ever became of this "donation" of TC data, drawings, approvals, jigs, tooling, equipment, and parts to the Taylorcraft Foundation?

What does the TF plan to do with them if this actually happens?

The Foundation reps & Board worked with Mr. Patrick and Steve Cooner to try to have this happen. Locations were found in Texas , Ca. or Ohio & even Wis.. Bill Read, and two other buyers were in on negotiations. The trip to Brownsville by Forrest & Bill Read ( Wag-Aero) was mutually called off do to that flu epidemic at the time. The Mexican deal was struck for a very low figure and was actually announced through England at the time. The Foundation Board meets at the Fly-In at Alliance each year and at other times by e-mail or telephone. The Foundation only wanted to be the TC holder and license others to use it. If any wants to discuss any of this call me any Tues, Wed or Thurs afternoon here at the Foundation.
WE are always looking for ideas. big ice storm coming tonight ......

The Mexican deal? Never heard of that (at least that I remember) Forrest, you never really answered the question. Where does all this stand at the present moment, was it a past opportunity unrealized or is it still a future possibility?

I have a Newsletter coming out next week that will post to the internet , please let me have a news release or something we can post to my members.

              Thank you Forrest A. Barber ,TF# 1.

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Mr. Barber,

Please accept my apologies but we have been very busy in the restructuration of the Taylorcraft company, I will be working on something in order for you to post it next week, I do not know if I mentioned this to you but we are very excited about the projects for the company, and we all agree in something, we cannot do this by ourselves, we need all the help, input, success and improvement stories, lesson learned stories so history wont repeat itself, and we will only reach success if we have the support of all the Taylorcraft owners and your forum is the best place to get in touch with them.
Our plan is to start full production in the second quarter of next year 2010, but please let me send you something for your newsletter.

              Best Regards.
