The delux cowl grills, are these castings magnesium or aluminum?

    They are cast aluminum
    Hank

Do you need them with or without side trim? Anyone have any side trim?

I should have a few pieces but I know I don't have a full set

I just need to repair one that I have.

I have a complete set of side trim to the door handle for both sides. I am uncertain if I am going to use them.

          Re: Delux Cowl Grills

I have been looking for years for enough pieces to put the trim back on my 41. It has a set of the cast grills with the side "wings" trimmed off now (looks very nice without the side trim pieces) and I have gotten a set of intact grills for her that really make me want to put all of the trim back on.
From what I have learned about the trim pieces I strongly suspect they are side trim from a pre-war Studebaker but I have not been able to identify which car or part numbers.
If anyone has pieces they would part with or if there is a Studebaker nut in the tribe who can identify the correct parts I would really like to hear from them. If someone wants to eliminate some weight, I will let go of the "no side trim" grills when I can put side trim back on mine. Grills with the "wings" look REALLY BAD with no side trim and wingless grills look silly with side trim.

Yep can attest to the looks. I have a complete set of side trim, still mounted. They will come off for recover. But I have the standard stamped grills only. If you want pics of the side mounting I can get them. I will have a full set of pics before the fabric comes off but that may be awhile. Larry

                Larry,
Sounds like you have the side trim and then either grills like mine (cast with the side wings trimmed off) or a later nose bowl with the stamped grills. Which do you have?
I need to look at all the bowls I have been working on for folks and see what it would take to make a late bowl accept the cast grills. Might make yours look closer to original.
                Hank

Or maybe make an extra trim piece to go from the side pieces and wrap around teh front and across the stamped grills.

                  Re: Delux Cowl Grills

I will take my nose bowl along to the shop where we are rebuilding a standard and compare it to that one. I really believe I have a standard bowl. But I do know I have a Deluxe because it has the banjo wheels, two doors, a left wing tank, all the side trim, and I am going to check the bungee covers now as I just read that in another post this morning. I will try to get some pics soon, it is too hot to work anyway might as well feed my addition taking pics. Larry

If anyone has a set of original cast trim pieces that I can BORROW and then return, I will go into the business of making reasonably priced reproductions for the Taylorcraft tribe. I have people here locally with the capability to do the intricate molds and do the casting process correctly, that have the appropriate aircraft parts experience.

                        Bill,
I have a set of rough cast ones, a set of "ready to use" and a set with the "wings" trimmed off (I also have some of the stamped ones for my 45, but they wouldn't lend themselves to casting very well). I also have the lower rectangle shaped one. Biggest problem I see is accounting for the shrinkage when a new one is cast from a mold that is already "on size".
I won't need my grills immediately since I still need to build up my panel.
                        Drop me a direct message.

Sleeps in the bed, brushed daily and generally has the life if Riley. I want to switch places with him. He even has his own custom seat belt for the car.

Someone did this about 10 years ago. They were raw, and very rough, not sure how well they sold. I think i have one side and the lower grill.

My "rough" set is from that bunch that were cast some years ago. I found my factory ones on line (I think) and never got around to cleaning up the cast ones.
I will try and make some cardboard cut outs to fit the different grills this weekend if I can get to the airport.

Got to make a list for this weekend. I owe LOTS of people pictures and templates!

Thanks Mike, I didn't remember that this had been done already... If they didn't sell well enough to justify the effort when they came out, then the market is not big enough to roll the dice again.
