  • Friendly Fields

While the family is sick, and the weather cold, I've been thinking about where to go on my first trip to Oskosh. I'm not interested in getting there fast, but want to explore some interesting places to stop on the way there and back. Where are friendly fields for Taylorcrafts stopping and re-fueling or camping overnight? And possibly to meet other members, do some hanger flying, etc..

    Dan,
44G, Blissfield, Michigan. Just North of Toledo, 2500 ft sod, E/W, with gas.
3 Cubs, and 1 Champ on the field.
Let me know when you are coming and I'll take you into town to eat.
You are about 7 flying hours from Oshkosh at T-Craft speeds from here.

        The group idea is great...
I posted a trip notice under "destinations, etc..." in this forum a few weeks back.
I could leave friday and make it a two day trip up .

You'd all be welcome at KVTI in Vinton, IA too. CC pumps for 100LL and Mogas, and I hereby give permission for any and all T-Crafts to camp on the field....I can do that!! If you land on the grass alongside 16-34, watch out for gopher holes.

Don't forget Brodhead, Wis, it has one of its main fly-ins (Piets & Hatz) the weekend that Oshkosh starts. Near Monroe, WI. Well worth dropping in; no hullabaloo...just a good ol' grass strip fly-in.

Thanks Mike, Eric, Walter, Rick, Dave and Rob. I'll get back to you when I get my routes laid out.

Walter, do you have GPS coordinates for your field or landmarks to find it?

Where is the best place to park and camp at OSH?

                        Dan,
Antique/Classic area and try to stay away from the South Forty. Everything is a hike from there.

Actually, the South 40, affectionately called "Fondy" for it's proximity to the next nearest aiport, isn't all that bad. I do hate to see a beautiful BC12-D stuck on the back fence, but with the busses (etc) it works. I've been parked at the Theater and I've been on the south fencerow. It's good to get to OSH! It's so big, you can't see it all anyway, so it doesn't really matter. You'll find good folks on any row! The only way to get a 'good' place is to go early. Even then, the 'insiders' tie up most of the good spots.
