  • Weld over braze?

    This is not aircraft related.

I did some brazing on a tank and then later decided it would have been easier to have welded.

I read somewhere that one should not attempt to weld over brazing.

I assume because the brazing material melts at a lower temp than the base metal, that welding over a braze would cause the brazing material to boil away, spattering filler material.

    Is that analysis correct?

I assume the recovery is to remelt the brazing filler and wire-brush it off???? - Mike

    Re: Weld over braze?

At welding temperature the brazing material alloys with the weld making it weak? Have no idea what the fix is, except to get it ALL off.

A good method for removing non-ferrous material is by sanding.
You probably can't melt the braze off and if you use a grinder it will only fill the pores in the grindstone.

If brazing is an acceptable option, then I would consider leaving well enough alone.

You need to cut out the brazed area, brazing changes the metalurgy of the joint. Tim

If you have to redo it with a weld, Tim nailed it.

Can't do it, braze has to be completely removed.
