  • STC needed for c-65 to c-85 engine upgrade

Hey tribe, I just purchased another T-crate ( my wife thinks i'm crazy ) with a new rebuilt c-65 on it. Now, I am planning on putting it on ski's in the winter, and floats in the summer, so I need a few extra horses. I purchased a c-85 stroker off a J-3 a couple of years ago, and plan on putting it on my new purchase. Do I need an STC to do this, and if I do, where can I obtain it.
If anyone can give me any info it would be appreciated..Cropduster

PS. If anyone is looking for a real good c-65 with only 40 hrs SMOH, contact me.

They did not make a C-65 only an "A-65". The STC you need is

You might want to contact Forrest Barber regarding this STC, it may be changed or change hands soon.

Someone recently published an N number on this site with an 85 installation pre '56, which makes it approved data

The former Gilberti, now Harer STC is in limbo , I have made offer ; NY ACO is involved too! Awaiting time & money.
You can put an 85 on the BC12D by merely doing it off the TC # 696 ; upgrade a BC12D , to a BC12D-85 . Just make the changes on the TC

Forrest, I thought the Serial number had to be above 12,001 or something like that for the airframe to be eligible for the 85 upgrade. Tim

Forrest, The last line on page 6 of type certificate 696 states eligible serial numbers 12001 and up. This specifically applies to BC12D-85 approved September 30, 1948...

Re: STC needed for c-65 to c-85 engine upgrade

YES those are the ones built in PA , Conway in fact ; however Read the beginning :

                      VI - Model BC12D-85, 2 PCL-SM, Approved September 30, 1948; Model BCS12D-85, PCL-SM,
                      Approved September 30, 1948
(Same as Model BC12-D except for increased power and gross weight, fuel system changes, auxiliary wing fuel tank, revised wing fittings and minor structural changes)Engines Continental C85-8F

That means IF you take a BC12D and do that underlined stuff to it ; then you have the "equivalent" of the BC12D-85 ; which from the factory had the 12001 numbers.... read Chet's Book also.

It does not appear there. Only on the factory drawings & the Harer STC that is their purpose.

What drawings do I need so I can get started and make sure it's all correct until the STC is available again?

                              Yeah me too!

Forrest, I'd like to get copies from the Foundation of the factory drawings on the revised wing fittings, fuel system changes, and other "minor" structural changes that are on the BC-12D-85.

Please let me know which drawings they are and what the cost of copying and mailing is. This will make things much easier for my upcoming restoration.
