  • Type of metal in liftstrut of 46 BC12D?

Can someone tell me the type of metal used in the rear lift strut (original smaller size: long axis ~1.8" short axis ~1") for my 46 BC12D? I'm looking to have this strut repaired per figure 4-43 in AC43.13-1B. I've found streamtube close to those dimensions in the Univair catalog that they call "mild steel". Aircraft Spruce doesn't have a 4130 streamtube listed that is close to those dimensions. Thanks! Bob

Bob, I have always thought it was 4130. Certainly I use 4130 repair material and 4130 welding rod, with no adverse effects.

I know I found some 1010 steel in my 1941 and some inthe 45. Post war they went to 4130 but both of my planes had some pre war parts. The alloy was determined by the welder I used. He said he could tell the alloy from the sparks off the metal. Says he's right in some of my engineering manuals but I would get Forrest to chime in for the final word.

I think 1010 and 1025 were indeed "mild steel"..needs some input from someone with access to the old SAE specs
