  • Tire time

Time to buy new 8.50 and tubes. Anyone got a prefference? Been told that some brands are taller than others, any truth to that? If so would like the tallest can get.

I'm interested in this info too, my 6.00 x 6 tires are getting bald and I'd like to go up to a larger size and higher ground angle.

      Re: Tire time

If you are looking to save money, I have had good luck with the 8.00 retreads that I bought from Dresser, who is listed in Trade-a-Plane. Would be a good deal for Bill, on the shipping, as they are down in SoCal.

        Is a STC needed to go from a 6.00 to an 8.00 tire? I have a L2-B with 6.00 x 6 and I would like to go to a larger size (8.00 x 6).

It has been mentioned to me previously that the original certification basis, CAR 4, allows the use of any tire with a speed and weight rating applicable to the aircraft.

I do not know if this applies to the L-2 or not, but it was told to me that it applies to the B models.

It also seems very likely that most governmental inspector types would not be able to tell the difference between a 6.00 x 6 and an 8.00 x 6 from six feet. Any IA worth his gray hair would also list this as a "minor alteration", the definition of which I am sure would be met.

That's just an opinion from an admitted smart ass, your IA may feel different.

            Re: Tire time

You can change tires on a field approval, there is a copy of one on the tech page, most of the 8.50's will run you about 300.00 per side new and less for Desser retreads. You can also upgrade to 26" goodyears if you are feeling real froggy. They run 1000.00 per pair and use 8.50 tubes. If someone tries to tell you that you have to have an STC for tires, they are wrong, its a field approval. Tim
