It only took 20 years but I finally got my Sport Pilot ticket!
I started flying in 1988 and in half a year quickly built up 35 hours in a 172. Along came kids and that was the end of the $$ for flying. After buying the Taylorcraft and knowing that taildraggers were the ONLY way to fly, I started taking instruction again last fall in a Cub with Steve Krog in Hartford, WI. The first flight in the Cub confirmed that I had made the right choice. An exhilarating 20 some Cub hours later, I took my checkride for Sport Pilot. I am happy to say that thru excellent instruction, I easily passed. I was glad we were tandem, as I got a bit fogged up heading back to HXF knowing I had finally joined the ranks and at 47 years old had accomplished a MAJOR lifelong dream. Shortly thereafter I was privileged to check off another major goal by flying into the Piet Fly-In at Brodhead as a pilot. I have been driving to MAAC and the Pietenpol fly-ins for 11 years now. The thrill of entering the pattern at C37 as a pilot triggered yet another wave of emotion that I will never forget. Being able to do it in the Cub was just icing on the cake. If all goes well, I will have NC20407 in the air next spring and will be able to check off the BIG one of flying my very own ship….something I hope to never take for granted
