I am having my Metal Prop ovehauled. They are giving me a choice of color,
grey or black. My paint job will have black trim on it. Is there any reason NOT to use a black prop. You don't see many. I did see one at the alliance fly in and it looked good. Any coments would be appreciated.

My L-2's was painted black, semi-gloss front, flat on the backside. I had no issues with it.

Same here. Black prop, no issues. My tips are yellow. I was flying this morning and noticed how easy the prop arc is to see with the yellow tips.

Black is the "new" McCauley colour (with the horrible rectangular logo). It is not appropriate for "older" aeroplanes.

Go with the grey. But certainly don't get the dreadful rectangular logo.

            Re: black prop

Thanks for all the replys. I probably will go with the black. My T-craft was never a "traditional" older airplane. When I restored it in 1970 the first time we painted it white with an orange sunburst on the wings and a plack and orage trim on the side. If I could I would scan and post some pictures of it on the web but the few i have are not very high quality. The prop at the time was polished. According to the latest from the manufacturer that is no longer legal.

I will be in Oshkosh all wek and hope to meet many of you. I will bring the pictures.

I use black and then get the industrial flat black paint for touch up. I dont use the logo, then I can paint any chips and not have to worry about the decal getting painted over. Tim

                      Re: black prop

Mark Julicher and I picked up a '47 BC12-D west of Houston, TX 2 weeks ago and brought it to San Antonio for a thorough look over...see the oil filter photo by Mark. The airplane had been sitting hangared since 1992. The McCauley polished metal prop had corrosion on all surfaces and was sent to Jordan Propellor for inspection. They were able to overhaul this prop to 7443 and it returned painted black with white double tips - very pretty. It will look great on this plane if we get it back to airworthy service. As an aside, Mark's BC12-D has a "Black Mac" that compliments his maroon and cream scheme. Doc
