    Re: 'TAYLORCRAFT' Logo Variants?? Hank??

We see deviations in manufacturing every day. The truth of the matter is that (in 1938, 1946 or 2008) manufacturers just want it out the door at a quality level acceptable to the consumer. I would venture to bet 20407 against the fact that all these paint masks/stencils were applied by hand and by sight, by different folks each day depending on where the labor was needed that day. In reality each painter had a subtle "signature" to their personal artwork....mostly unseen by management(if they cared at all).

      Tribe,
I have a rudder with the original factory fabric on it. It was from a '41 DeLuxe. There are a couple of pics on my web site, www.taylorcrafter.com on pages 18 and 19. Just scroll down past the "for sale" stuff. I could get better shots if someone is interested. I believe that I made a a drawing of it also to get the height and placement of the numbers. Between the two colors is a 1/4" gold stripe. I took a small strip of fabric from it and sent it to Hank J. a few years ago for his reference.

Ah, so they had stencil webbing voids remaining in the final product.

I got to talk to one of the original factory workers years ago (over 25 years ago now) and he said they pulled the tape for the color division from the front to the rear. They didn't worry much about where it ended (on the first side). They generally tried to run the tape to either the bottom of the fin post or about half way between the bottom and the stab. The ones with the mid height aft end had the bottom color continue straight to the back of the rudder or in a curve down. All three versions look good and there should be copies of the drawings I did of each in one of the old paper newsletters. From what the old timer said the only hard part was making sure the trim line was the same on the second side.

We had all the stencils and my Father, Al Barber used to free hand with narrow masking tape , then I would fill in with the paper. Same for the J-3 Cub ; yes there are drawings but the individual worker had a bit of a free hand as was mentioned in an earlier post. All the info is here, sounds like a good project for local members to put together and post.

                  Forrest,
Do you have any original pictures that show the logo on the stabilizer on a 41 Deluxe? I have some old pictures and ADs that show it but none of them very well. By the way--when I bought my Fairchild project it came with an extra stabilizer that had the original fabric and logo still on it. If anyone is restoring a Fairchild 24 and wants a picture of it I can send one if they want to make a copy of it.
                  THANKS,
                  Buell

I went to a LOT of trouble to get a really nice set of stencils made by a graphics house locally and sprayed the tail of my 41. Even though I sealed the stencil prior to spraying, the color bled under and it was a mess. I ended up using the "mess" as a guide and hand painting them with some fine sable artists brushes. I can take some pictures if you want. I'll be going out to the hangar (hopefully this weekend).

Taking off the stabs made painting the fin a LOT easier!

Buell... I wonder if it's the same logo they used in '29 on the "71"? If so, I'd love to have it....

It's from a 46 F24. I dont know if it would be the same for the 71 but I can send you a picture and some measurments if you need them.-if you can send a PM with your e-mail address(I haven't figured out how to attach a picture to a PM).
