  • O-200 carb help needed

    Hi tribe,

Not T-craft related but thought someone on this forum may be able to help out....

    MA3SPA 10-4894 carburetor on an O-200

Our mechanic called today. While completing the annual inspection he removed the inlet screen and upon reinstallation found that the threads are damaged beyond use in the carburetor body. He suspects that over time people have been turning it a bit tighter each year to achieve proper alignment with the hose (rather than adjusting the other connections) and it has thus stripped the threads.

It is my understanding so far from my phone calls that this cannot be repaired. There apparently is no approved method to repair or replace the threads.

I am also finding that the carburetor is apparently hard to find also. The overhaul shops I have called so far have none in stock and "can only rebuild the one we have"…but "can’t because of the thread issue". It is probably worthless as a core because of the damage. Spruce has them backordered as they have been waiting for months to receive their order.

Anyone out there have any brilliant ideas? Is there potentially some way we can repair this? Anyone have any suggested overhaul shops or parts suppliers for me to call to try to find one we can buy? Anyone have an extra one they may be willing to part with?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Brian

Don't expect Spruce to get any carbs any time soon. Precision quit making carbs and parts due to liability. I think someone else is or has picked up the line, but it will be awhile before any is available. Call Ted at El Reno Aviation and see if he can help. Tell him Mike Redpath sent you. Their phone # is in trade-a-plane

Try Wentworth for a used carb.

The MS carbs were picked up by Tempest, IIRC. It'll be interesting to see what this does to parts availability. When the picked up the AC (Aero Accessories) pumps they shut off the flow of parts to outside overhaulers.

Why can't it be Heli-Coiled or welded and remachined? Why can't someone screw in an AN fitting to the stripped threads, then (properly) weld a bead around the corner?

You might try Navajo accessories. Talk to Alvin who owns the place. He likes to say that he works on stuff that is as old as dirt, and he keeps a pile of old carburetor bodies in the back room. I think he could rebuild a Wright Flyer from his junk pile.

You might get lucky. phone 210 341 6235

Mr. Bill ....I love the way you think, when I was a young man I made a fortune welding the ears back onto the blocks of VW's oil coolers after a rear end hit. I even build a jig to machine them true to recieve the element.God knows how many are still out there.
