  • Compass question

I have an original Taylorcraft compass which sits on top of the instrument panel. It has a Taylorcraft logo across the front. Unfortunately, the liquid inside has become so muddy that I can't read it any more.

Took it to an instrument shop but they wouldn't do overhaul because they said they could get no parts. The tech came right out and admitted that he was afraid of it. Anyone know of someone willing to work on these old things?

I love it because it is dead accurate, and looks lots cooler in my old girl than the new ones I would have to replace it with.

      Re: Compass question

Try Keystone Instruments at Piper Memorial Airport in Lock Haven, PA. They did a bubble face Taylorcraft compass a few years ago for me, so they are familiar with them. I have also had them refurbish and yellow tag all of my original Taylorcraft gauges and a few other things. They do an excellent job! Just don't tell them "there is no rush". I made that mistake and they hadn't worked on them for a year until I called to see where they were. Once they knew I wanted them though, they did them in short order. Good folks.

Below is an example of their work on my instruments...............

Capt.Jon: What a beautiful panel and set of instruments. Give us a tip on keeping your electronics powered up. How often to recharge the batteries, etc. Thanks.

I bought a kit from Wag-Aero for about $25. It came with a new glass window, gasket, and fluid. It took about 5 minutes to replace the glass and refill the compass. Broke the glass while tightening the screws, but so far it hasn't leaked.
