  • Stromberg Carburetor Overhaul?

After going through everyone's suggestions on why my static RPM is too low ( see http://vb.taylorcraft.org/showthread.php?t=5175 ) , everything seems to check OK. My AI now wants the carburetor cleaned and overhauled & he hasn't worked on these old Strombergs. Mine is a Mod.# NA-S3A1. Any ideas about who can do a good job? Or other thoughts from the tribe? Thanks..

Aircraft Systems in Rockford, IL rebuilt mine last summer. Nice improvement, for about $450...

I just had mine overhauled at D & G Supply here in Michigan. All new gaskets, needle and seat, All ADs complied with, float set, and new paint. Very quick turnaround and I paid about $350 shipped to my door. Good reputation here in Michigan. I'm very happy with them.

check that number Mod.# NA-S3A1. see If it is the correct one for your engine. I will have to pull the book on that one, my brain may be off too!!
All Strombergs can have a multitude of jets, venturis, and settings.
          Send it out.

Forrest, I just checked the Contintental E-205 TCDS and that is the right model for my engine. Thanks..

            Don, Mike and Jim,
Thanks for your recomendations -- I've passed them on to my AI. I hope to get back in the air soon and see you at Alliance (and with luck Oskosh) this year.

              Dan,

You (or someone) need to check the Stromberg manual and find the "list number" for your engine.

It lists the jet sizes, venturi size, bleed sizes and so on for use in that carb when its on your engine. Things like fuel pump or gravity feed will make a difference in which list in the manual is applicable.

Then one must check the carb to verify that the proper jets, bleeds... are installed in your carb.

A list number will probably be stamped on the flat portion of the carb's float housing, even if it matches the Stromberg manual check anyhow because the internal parts may have been changed and the stamping not changed.

thank u David that was what I was leading up to. I have found them really messed up inside, then actually check the jet for correct size, some good old boys have re drilled them in the past.

NAS-3A1 should have a mixture plate. Carb should have 10 dash number or Continental part number to determine what it started out life as. For A-65 should have 1-1/4 venturi, and I think a 43 main jet. Steel needle and seat preferred but must be perfectly lapped.

65 has a 45 main and a 49 bleed air with the 1 1/4 venturi per my manual. I do know a few guys have put the 1 3/8 venturi with a 43 main and a 45 bleed for operations at high density altitude airports, not approved of course but it did help performance. Tim
