Bear with me, guys. I shipped the Shinn brake shoes and "I" shaped retainers for the shoes off to the powder coater. One "I" piece was marked "R" and the other was not stamped, so I assumed it to be the "L". Now they're back, ready to assemble, and I find nothing is as it should be. The piece marked "R" only fits my NOS aluminum dust/backer plate which is clearly stamped "Left". The unmarked piece also only fits the "Left" marked backer plate. Assumptions: the "I" piece is incorrectly stamped with an "R", both the left and right NOS dust/backer plates are stamped incorrectly, I have two of the same side "I" pieces, a genie jumped into the parts box sometime in the last 30 years and swapped parts with someone else. I can see that there really needs to be a Left and a Right brake set-up because of the off-set actuator half-loop, the eccentric backer plate locater pin and the off-set adjuster sliders/nuts, but I do not know why or how to determine which is which. Any one out there got a quick check for me to see what happened here? Also - it appears I'll need to swap my newly powder coated "I" piece, which may be an "R", for someone's extra "L" piece. Any one have a serviceable one to trade for a beautiful black powder coated one? Clear enough? Sorry for being a rookie about this, and thanks for any help! Bob Coolbaugh

Re: Shinn Brakes Conundrum
Thanks, Gents.
Jim's thumbnails showed exactly what I need to see. That means I have 2 of the same side "I" pieces. Now - the replacement parts search begins! Any one have a spare "I" piece or a parts source for one? I can trade my perfect, powder coated extra for whatever you have or purchase it outright.
While we're on the subject - has anyone found a source for the 1/8" thick by 1" wide brake lining material? I have only located 3/16" wide stock, which appears too thick to fit without turning down. If I want to buy 50 foot min. rolls, I can get exactly what I need - but that's enough to do all the Shinn brakes out there for the rest of our flying! Just need 3 feet m-o-l. Bob

I am perplexed about the parts book showing only one p/n since the pictures show a clear difference. I must be missing a note that says add L or R to the p/nLast edited by Guest; 02-03-2008, 07:05.
