Re: STC # SA4797NM how do I get it ?

we have the cessna rudder pedals and brakes on our BC-12D and believe we got a field approval based on the previously issued one time STC. I think if you reference the original STC and a number of other aircraft that are using the system you may be able to get it approved. ie all these planes are using it and I want to also! It's worth a try.

I used to live in Klammath Falls., and E.A. Bigby has been deceased for many years. I have seen his design on other airplanes, so I know it has been copied. I MAY have a copy of the STC at home. But I am on the opposite side of the country from home and will not return until late January.

In my opinion it is a poor design because it cuts the original axle off about 3" out from the mounting flange and welds a Cessna 150 style axle on. I have heard of two cases of the axle breaking at the weld.

Well, that couldn't be good... I guess it is important to make sure the person that welds it is skilled. I do a lot of welding but for really critical stuff we go to someone that does it on a daily basis. (and I guess modifying an airplane axle would fall into the "really critical" category.) Our mod was done about 12 years ago and still working fine. (probably about 600 hours and a bazillion landings, some not all that great)

This is a picture of my gear leg that I pressed a 1 1/2 cub axle over the factory 1 1/4 axle and welded the flange of the cub axle to the flange of the T-craft axle, I also cut the tapered axle off right at the new axle and slipped a bushing inside of the new axle and over the old one and welded both together. Which keeps the new one aligned. after welding I had to dress the threads a little to get the nut on, but it worked out real good.

I understand from my conversations with the factory they will coming out soon with a factory mod (no stc needed) for engine upgrade and also hydraulic brake kit. ..let the fur fly....
