  • New Taylorcraft Project

    Hi all-

I am looking at a prewar BL (BC)-65 project. It is missing some semi-major parts. I have supliers for most all the missing parts, but cost for NEW parts seems very expensive. What is the general consensis on availability of finding some of these parts used? This will be my first Taylorcraft, and im planning a bare bones, restoration (minimal STC's/337's) I know about the basic differences between the BL and BC models. the project comes with a basic A-65, no accesories.

Some of the larger parts needed:
    engine mount
    complete cowling
    wheels/brakes
    tailwheel assembly (prefer scott)
    spars (planning new)
    mags
    carb
    Carb air box
    Prop hub (tapered crank)
    Wood prop (planning new)
    struts (planning new sealed)
    Wing tank

When i have completed inventory the project i'm sure i will have a huge list of parts needed. i will post the list for anyone who has stuff they need rid of.
I have been poking around here or a while and have found a lot of good info.
    Keep up the good work.

    Thanks

Welcome! We like folks with a sense of humour!

From your list I would suggest that cowlings and wheels are the most difficult items to source, but by no means impossible to locate. Keep your eyes open here, and on Barnstormers, etc.

      Welcome.

      - Engine mounts (short) can be had used, not to difficult to find
      - Cowling can be an issue to find used in good shape. most are beat up pretty good.
      - Wheels and brakes can be tricky. Outer wheel halves are becoming scarce.
      - Brake parts are available from Skybound.
      - Tailwheels can be had used
      - Spars, if you have the tools, buy raw stock and build them yourself. Less chance of a finished spar being damaged in shipment
      - mags can be had used, but new Slicks can be close to rebuilt used depending on which ones you are buying.
      - carb can be had used and very cheap to rebuild (stromberg)
      - struts, get new ones from Univair or the guys in Alaska.

I have quite a few parts as do a couple others on the board. I have some of what you are looking for. mags (dependingon what you want), carb, mount (maybe), and maybe some other stuff you have yet to mention.

This is my first project with wood spars. What type of specialty tools are required to make them from spar stock? Is there anyone willing to finish them for me? What would it cost?
Also, i have run accross a set of wings with metal spars (DC?) Has anyone, in the last few years, gotten the FAA to sign off on a 337 intalling them on a previously wood spar model?

One more thought: Are the struts for the BC12D the same as the prewar BL (BC)- 65? I'm still waiting for my manuals to come in the mail.
        Thanks,

          Thanks,
Reproduction struts are the same, originals are not. DC metal spar wings wont bolt up to the "B" model. I actually have a set a metal spar wings for a "B". Supposedly 100 or less ships had these wings. The wing attach and strut attach fittings are different along with the control system, and ribs.

I have a Stromburg carb rebuilt by Navajo Accessories and yellow tagged. I will let it go for $450 which is what I have in it. You may find one cheaper, but I know this one is in good shape.
                Best Regards,
