  • I put my new struts on!

    I got them a month or more ago and finished the installation about 14 days ago.

    I had to modify one jury strut clamp because the stream line tubing is different on front strut.

    My old struts had repairs on them so I lost 7 lbs empty weight, about $400 per pound!

    After changing the struts I can tell you there is no way I would do that every two years. I guess there is a chance for an AMOC that allows on plane testing. I probably wouldn't even do that.

    I don't know yet my old struts pass the test.

    I think my plane's value is higher and I will get my old struts tested and sell if good.

    My old front struts were not the same length (independent of and prior to the repairs) when I contacted the factory many years ago about that they said it was within the tolerance. The new struts must be the same length because I can no longer see the slight difference in wing tip height that I could see with old struts. But I cruise about 4-6 mpgh faster so something has changed with respect to angle of incidence probably due to the front strut length is my guess. Maybe it was just to re-rigging? Dunno but I like it!

    Dave, did you get Univairs? Where's the pictures???? Glad to hear you're happy and gained load as well as speed.

      I did buy Univair's.

      Speed gain is definite, could be as low as 2-3 hard to tell but used to go 99mph at 2200 rpm now it looks like 101 to 104 at same rpm. I have a odd prop installation cm7049 metal prop

      As I took my old ones apart I noticed that the linseed oil flush I did many years ago (filled them completely and drained) sealed in the adjusters!

      Had to heat them to free up the dried linseed oil.

        Dave, congrats. How did you support the wings while the struts were off? I also would like to know how to raise my plane to change tires or work on the brakes? Thanks Don

          2001 Ford Focus wagon with foam pads on top.

          Buy a cheap 2 ton hydraulic jack. First go measure from the inside of the wheel frm the bottom of the cabane strut to the ground then only buy a jack that is shorter than that. I found one for under $10.

                my jack is 6-1/8" high

                this one is 6-1/2" => http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=47758

                don't know this height looks promising though => http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VQGPUW/...W&linkCode=asn

                this says its 6" => http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RGRWE4/...4&linkCode=asn
