  • Rare Pre-war Prototype Taylorcraft?

Just kidding. Here are a couple pics of the Karner project at Brodhead. Kind of a shame that he had to use a pre-war project but it IS really cool. 90hp Lambert and check out those airwheels. Clipped wings from scratch.

Oh Man! And I'd just pushed the idea of putting a ROTEC on 20442 out of my head....again. C.G. might be interesting.

It seems to me that apparently the Air was either quite a bit heavier or gravity was quite a bit lower during the pre-war years... as today we need to cover these planes in fabric. That said, I love the erector-set look and hope you've not taken me seriously.

To me, it embraces all that is antique. This is exactly what I would like to have built and will watch the project closely. Perhaps one day I will build something similiar. I have a set of wooden floats started that were for my Pietenpol Sky Scout. They are diagonally planked ala 19teens boatbuilder style. They would look super sweet on a ship like this one. My current Taylorcraft is my first venture into a certificated aircraft....I SORELY MISS THE FREEDOM AFFORDED THE EXPERIMENTAL BUILDER and am jealous of this project.

I didn't know you were a Pietenbuilder also. It seems like a lot of Piet folk are also Tcraft folk. Hey... by the way... your strut inspection results should be posted on the new thread for strut inspection results.

                  Terry,

I am working my way thru testing of (6) more strut ends that Ragwing Nut sent me. I will compile results and post (by next weekend I hope).

Here are pics of my Sky Scout. I had to sell during divorce. Now flying at Brodhead.

                    Terry,

Pics of my daughter getting her young eagles ride from old Piet master Bill Rewey himself last weekend at Brodhead. Her first words after coming down were "Dad, why did you sell our Pietenpol" and then "let's get started building another one" Bill got quite a chuckle out of her. Do you have a Piet?

                      Mike...
Thats gorgeous. I remember seeing photos of your airplane, but did not associate it with your name. Great to see your daughter having an interest too.

I guess we are getting WAY off topic here. But anyways... here is a link to info on my project. This is a partnership between me and my father-in-law. Our progress slowed WAY down after he and later I both bought flying Taylorcrafts. But this project is a lifelong goal for me. My kids will hopefully enjoy the Piet as much or more than me. My 12-yr old stepson Travis has built a few Piet parts and seems to have the most interest of our 6 kids.

                          Re: Rare Pre-war Prototype Taylorcraft?

                          Mike,
Those 6 struts should be x-rayed also. In fact, it would be great to X-ray before ultrasound in order to pinpoint the most problematic areas. Any chance someone in your area could help you get this done?

The problem with this whole group effort here is that we are so loosely organized. Wouldn't it be great if our foundation had a non-profit status and a small pool of financial resources from which we could fund a small project to get several rusted struts X-rayed, Ultra sonic inspection, and a pull-test. Too bad we are not big enough to give the FAA the kind of data they need for making educated decisions on this AD.

I have plans to build a Piet as well but I am waiting to find either a Funk Ford FWF or a "B" model core.
