  • Is there a prohibition on two splices on a landing gear strut?

I removed the questionable external splice on my landing
gear. The splice was on the streamlined strut. Unfortunately,
removing the splice didn't leave enough original tubing at the lower
end to apply an external sleeve. So I figured I'd install a splice
using an internal sleeve and give myself enough strut to then use an
external splice higher up the strut.
Is there a prohibition on putting more than one splice on that strut? -

Mike why not replace the whole strut? It shouldnt cost much more than buying all that tubing for splices and would look new. Marv

Marv - Forrest has also mentioned that as a solution; however, I'm scared away because of the weld at the upper end. I'll go thru my CD collection to see if I really have anything to worry about, but the weld sure is intimidating.

Anyone in the group done that weld? - MikeH

I have a tie strut coming from the factory to do a complete replacement, am setting up a jig too!

Good morning Forrest - I've been looking thru the Greene collection of CDs and don't see anything on the upper weld. Do you have another reference?

Also, would you know if there is a prohibition on more than one splice on that streamlined member? - MikeH

Don't you need a jig to do a proper job ,even if you are splicing? Marv

There might be some stiffening required, but since the lower end is bolted in place and the other end is welded, as long as everything is straight, no fancy jig is required. Now, if the welded end was being replaced, that's another story. - MikeH

Mike: Find a NOS Gear somewhere and replace the whole gear That way you'll have no splice. Just cost a few dollars more to go 1st class.

Thank you. Are you aware of any probibition on two splices on a landing gear strut? - MikeH

I see no prohibition for two splices, BUT why?? I replace the whole tie strut. And yes you should jig it, it can spread when unbolted or the heat can distort it , simple jig to keep distance correct.

Re: Is there a prohibition on two splices on a landing gear strut?

I think I solved the problem.
I had another damaged gear with that streamlined strut in good shape for most of it's length. The bushing was for a smaller bolt (around 19/64ths) while the 'ears' on the gear I"m attempting to repair had been enlaraged to 3/8ths. I pushed the small bushing and replaced it with one with a 3/8th ID.
Now all I have to do is cut that tube so it mates with the existing/original strut and apply an external splice. Back to one splice.

Now - Forrest has mentioned replacing the complete strut several times and that's probably the best way to go; however, I have been unable to locate any illustration showing how the weld at the top end goes together. Can't see anything in the Greene CDs. Further, has anyone been successful locating the original size streamlined material? - MikeH

I always get a kick out of seeing repairs to something like this... 9 times out of 10, it would be less work to just replace the whole tube... like has been said, it will be apparent how the weld is done as you cut the old one out. That weld should be no more intimidating than any other.... and no less or more critical than a weld on a splice.
