  • nose tank leaking

    Hi all,
I'm at my wits end here. I have removed a leaking metal tank, put in a
aluminum tank only to discover it is leaking too. Now following repairs it is
still leaking and this was welded by a pro . I'm almost too nervous moww to
put it in because of all the work involved.

Anyone have a GOOD tank for sale? or know a proper repair facility?

How bad and where? I suggest using MIL 8802 B1/2 fuel tank sealant. Nasty but will never leak again.

This is a normally a simple fix.

Did it leak during the pressure test after he welded it?

Did he test it? How did he test it?

I weld, test, weld, test... till I get it right.

Don't put it back in untill it passes the test.

If all that happened then maybe you have a plumbing leak?

      Sorry for your troubles, Dave

He says he tested it but, I know he used water. Would water being heavier
impose a greater pressure or would it be less effective for this same reason? The leak is a slow one and appears to be at the seam behind the valve and
another close to the filler neck .
but a leak none the worst.

Gas and oil are lot thinner then water, believe it or not.

Just disassemble the valve, clean the cone and the body lightly with scotchbright, check the solder around the stop pin, (you will see it once you get the valve apart) and relube with ezturn, you can get a small tube from Intermountain aero/spruce/wicks,etc. There is a leather seal at the shaft output, check it and if its not cracked, lube it and reinstall. Good luck Tim

Robert, I am guessing that you really mean forward of the valve?

I find that you have to pressurize the tank with air, just a few psi and then take some soap water as swish it around with a 1" paint brush whipping up some bubbles and look very closely for bubbles that move.

              Tedious but effective.

I have seen that front seam be leaky before. It goes alway aroung tank and gets close to the filler also.
