    Re: Finally !!!

How do you like that Vertical Card Compass? We were discussing that at the Columbia, CA fly-in. There was talk that the vibration of the plane made the compass unreadable. My whiskey compass is kaput (I drank the whiskey). I need to either get another whiskey compass or spring for the Vertical Card job. How about it? Which should I go for?

Nice panel btw, yours too Peter!

        Re: Finally !!!

I got lazy when I made my panel, its .050 t3 and I mounted the instruments like the military does. I hated laying under the panel to get an instrument out. I also kept it simple, I didnt want all of those IFR thingys in the way

          Re: Finally !!!

Put a VCC in the 172 when the whiskey one crapped out. Wow! Just like having a DG that you don't have to keep resetting. Stable and smooth operation, even in turbulence. Now the T-craft has two compasses (compii?) one that works and the Taylorcraft bubble face that kind of works and is waiting for me to magnetize a couple of nails to slide into the compensator holes........yep it's an old one. Here's another picture of a panel. About as simple as they get. It's installed on NC43913 undergoing restoration. When I got her she had the cut up, modified panel shown in the other photograph. She had space for six 3" instruments, only one was in working condition!

              Re: Finally !!!

Sonja Henie's Tu Tu!!! That right hand panel is a pre war shock mount panel like my 41 had originally! I hand tapped a replacement one from sheet metal and the neighbors STILL hate me for all the tapping noise. Do you still have it?

                Hank:

Sure, I still have it. (The two piece panel with all the holes, right?) It's a little rough but I'll be happy to send it to you if you can use it.

I thought I had your address here someplace, Hank, but I can't find it just now. Maybe you can send it to me on the PM.

                  Re: Finally !!!

Thanks for all your replies. Taylorcaft didn't have any blank panels, so it looks like I have to use the one I have. I will clean it up and paint it, make new labels and move the tach next to the altimeter and airspeed. I plan on putting my hand held where the tach is now andprobably leave the turn and bank out for now or put it where Richard P has his.
I I'm getting new slick mags and a new Sensenich prop. I was thinking of getting new lift struts on the right side but for now we are just going to repair them. If the patch bothers me down the road I will replace them.
I think I'll be flying by July cant wait.

Richard, I second Howard's comments about the VCC - very DG-like.

I know, this is silly but this address isn’t getting bombed with junk mail and this method seems to work. If someone wants to drill down THIS far in a group like this I probably WANT to talk to them any way!

I made a replacement panel from scratch for the 41 but have always been curious as to whether I got the shapes just right. The original one I had to work with had been repaired and was Bondoed into a block in an attempt to make a buck for hammering new ones. It didn't work. They couldn't get the Bondo out of the panel and it became a 50# instrument panel. I finally got them apart and made a carved buck that I made my new panel on. It would be fun to see if yours fit on my buck.
I can't remember where you live but DON'T send it and spend a pant load of money just to satisfy curiosity! If we are close we can try and meet up sometime and I will bring the buck (it weighs a TON too!). I am REALLY curious on the shape of the instrument support panel that goes behind the pop-out part and holds the instruments. I had to design that part from scratch and didn't even have any photos. It does a great job of shock mounting the instruments but is way too complex. Anybody have tracings of the support parts behind the center panel?
My whole panel and all the instruments are out right now so this is a great time to make changes. It was a pain to remove but I want to overhaul all the instruments while I am replacing all the windows in the cockpit and, putting in the new headliner.

Re: Finally !!! Instruments going to Keystone

This is the last chance for anyone who wants to join me in seeing about a "bulk rate" for getting instruments done at Keystone. I am sending them a request for shipping instructions and cost/time estimates for the 41 and 45 instruments. If anyone else wants to get their instruments done now is the time to speak up!
On a side note, a while ago someone had a picture of the Oil gauges with the Taylorcraft logo on them. Anyone have a picture of which instruments had the logos? If I'm going to get the faces re-done I thought I would get them to do the logo too. Any other instruments than the Oil gauges have the logo?

                          Re: Finally !!!

Hank you better me put on your list of interested! I will have to get to the airport to see what I have for instruments as I have been working on the wings in my shop at home. When would you need them as they are still in the plane. I have a pre war shock mount type with the outer panel off but the inner panel holding the instruments is still in place and a bear to work on, as all the controls mounted below are still in place too. My panel is a simple one though. I will take pics as I disassemble the rest. I lost all my pics last month when my laptop crapped out! Larry

                            Re: Finally !!!

Man, I know what that's like. I was making a back-up of all my Taylorcraft pictures and the computer "burped". The stinking thing dumped all the originals AND the copies! The IT guy atork said "you didn't have a back-up?!?!?!!". Well, of COURSE I did. I was UPDATING the back-up when the computer dumped! Moral is have TWO back-ups. Never make a copy over your old back-up till you have another one!
I will send my letter tomorrow to get a time frame and shipping methods. I'll see how they would want to handle adding more to my two planes worth. Send me an e-mail address and I will send you the pictures I have of my instrument collection. I am at hjarrett2 at cox dot net.

Anybody else want to get in on this?
