    F21 vs Supercub

    Craig,

Capt Jon posted a couple picture of my planes up on his site.

Yeah, I'm impressed with the F21s performance. I've only flown in a Supercub once, but don't remember it being all that much better than the F21. Had a guy with me the other day who claimed to weigh 280 (though I'd say he was more like 300). He barely fit in the plane and had to work hard to stay off the yolk and pedals. The plane did amazingly well at that weight (about 1700#) We still got off in about 400-500 feet with a little bit of headwind. The stall speed was barely changed--about 47mph on the airspeed indicator. I get about 45 with just me.

Wondering if there's anyone out there who's flown both and could comment on the relative merits of each. I'm not suggesting that the F21 is pound for pound every bit of aircraft the Supercub is...but at a half to third the money, it seems like a great alternative, especially the ones which have a legal 1700# gross. I would think that if the new ones (T-Craft) ever roll off the line, they'll make a great bush plane alternative to the Supercub, especially with the 180hp engine. Wonder if there's many F21s currently earning their living up North.

If you look at the pics of N4417E, note the bottom cowling. The former owner, a retired machinist, fabricated it. It's a bit more aerodynamic than the stock F21 cowl. I think it's an improvement.

    Cheers,
    Brady

      Brady,
We have a 90hp Supercub on the field. I've been up in it a few times, and would be willing to bet that my Taylorcraft will outclimb it and take off in at least a short of distance. Only advantage I see to the Supercub is a little more legroom, and not as crowded with a passenger. Everyone on the field comments about how quickly the Tcraft gets off the runway, and how quickly it climbs. IMHO it makes a great alternative to a Supercub with plenty of change left in your pocket.

I agree with you. I prefer the T-Craft to the Super Cub ( a nice airplane, but not worth that much money.)

I had a '95 MX-7 180 Maule, I had purchased new. sold it last year. Big mistake. Would out perform a super Cub. every day of the week, plus you also had room for two more persons. I have also owned PA-18, PA-11, PA-12,J-3,& J-5's. All good aircrafts, but my two favorite for everyday in and out are the T-Crafts and the Maules

          Lee,
Someday I hope to be able to step up to a Maule MX-7-180. That would be about the perfect plane for me. PA-12 was on my want list too, but I can't see it being any better than the Tcraft other than more interior room.

Wish I could make your fly-in, but I can't get away. Maybe some other time though. Do you ever make the October fl-in at Reklaw, TX?

Now you folk there all wash your mouths with soap....

The Maule is indeed a fine aircraft, but it is not accepted here in general discussion on this forum....

For a start it costs a bunch more. More fuel, more maintenance, too many electrical gizmos (begorrah! it has ELECTRIC START! {errrr..F22's, please ignore last} )

C'mon, chaps and chapesses, the Maule admiration website is at http://www.LoveMaule.com so no need to go on too much about them here.

                  Lee,

Nice Maule - always been a favorite of mine.

Our "Bushwhacker R" with the Radial should out-perform a Supercub on any given day- at half the price, brand new - we're getting 500 lbs. of static thrust spinning a 76 X 55 prop!!!

                  Brady,

                  Does this look familar???

                    Regrets...

                    Chris,

You're making me feel even worse for selling that airplane (NC29688)! It's Like looking at the picture of an old girlfriend and realizing that you should have never broken up with her. There really wasn't much wrong with her. She was out of annual and needed a new exhaust--that's about it. I practically gave it away and I'm embarassed to admit what I sold it for. I think she's flying in Colorado. I hope so!

The "Bushwacker" sounds awsome! Somebody needs to make an affordable plane to compete with the Supercub. The price of them is asinine. Do you have any orders for the Bushwacker yet? Good luck and sorry I won't make it to Sun n Fun.

Sorry, Brady. If it makes you feel any better, she was plenty airworthy and should be flying. You made up for it with your new additions!
