Confused again! Just rec'd what was supposed to be a prewar door and it comes with SN# 6823? Who can tell me what I have here? The stripped door is off my 1938 (SN1095). The primed one is the door in question. The differences being the swingout window, and more flanged tubing on 6823. Id this a BC-12D door frame?

FORREST.......Still waiting to hear from you on parts you were rounding up for me in trade for those Taylor-Young data plates? I still need a LH pre-war door and RH swingout window frame.

    Re: Doors

    Mike,

The terms 'pre-war' and 'post-war' are not really accurate when talking doors. The model B doors are the same through roughly mid-'46, when the switch was made to the wider metal door with sliding window and exposed diagonal tube in the door opening. More accurately the different doors can be referred to as 'original' and 'late' type. I should think that your '38 should have also had the swing-out windows originally. Obviously there was a minor change in construction of the doors somewhere along the line, but once covered, a '38 door and early '46 door would be identical in appearance and function. The exception is the '41 Deluxe, which retains the original shape and swing-out window, but is constructed of wood and uses an automotive (Model A?) type handle latch and lock. I have seen the numbers on the window latches before...they don't necessarily correspond to the actual serial number of the airplane.

      Re: Doors

They are both prewar style doors one being later than the other. I even have some very early doors that may be "A" model that are aluminum. The door with the flange on it is the later door used in 41-45 models. Not sure when they changed over from the original one you have.

        Re: Doors

Both the window latch and the upper door hinge have #6823 stamped in. Chet's book lists this as a BC12-D. I thought all 12-D's were post war. Just trying to understand the details a little better.

          Re: Doors

Correct, all 12-D's are post-war airplanes. The fundamental change that makes the airplane a 'D' is the use of the L-2/Model D vertical fin and rudder in place of the original design. Pretty much everything else is interchangeable across all model B variants.

The BC-12D also uses the horizontal tail 2 hinge units from the L-2 as well. Dick

That door on the right in the picture is exactly like my 45 BC-12 "Deluxe". Don't know what other planes it went on but it is a VERY light and strong door.
