Strut wing fairings

I have notice some Taylorcraft have wing fairings at the strut to wing attach junction. Is this a standard item or modification/add on? I would like to put them on my bird since I am doing an on going clean up and repaint. Does anyone have information how they are attached and poss a flat drawing that can be traced?

drill a small hole in the strut attach fitting and attach with sheet metal screw.

Each different size strut tube has a different size fairing. I tried once to gather patterns for each one and it seems that every year they changed the strut size! Measure the major and minor axis of each strut (get ready, LOTS of planes have different struts left to right). If I have the pattern you need I can send you a copy. Otherwise all you can do is get some cardboard and start making them to fit.

If you find one please post it. BUT DO NOT DRILL ANY HOLES IN THOSE STRUTS.

The two "U" channels coming out of the wings the struts attach to should already have a hole for the attach screws. You should not need a hole in the strut, SO DON'T DRILL ANY! You also want to put the rubber edge guards on the fairing so the fairing doesn't rub on the steel strut.

I do have a set of fairings compliments of Rob. You would have to hand fit them to your struts but I can make a copy and post it here if it has not been done. Larry

I have made a number of sets of the fairings and if you can get a set that DOESN'T fit you can make a cardboard one to wrap your struts and see if it needs to be larger or smaller. By measuring the circumference of the strut and the length of the cuff where it wraps around it you can get an idea of how much to enlarge it on a xerox machine. Once you get a paper one to fit you can cut one from aluminum. DON'T expect it to fit right! I had to make a BOX of them to get a set that actually fit smoothly to the wing and strut.

Be really careful fitting them to the wing. The edge of the metal will cut the wing fabric in a heart beat! DON'T leave off the rubber edging!

I had this in my files. It is NOT what I used to make mine, but it is worth making a cardboard one to do a fit check.Hank
