        Marc:

I use the icom a-6 with the AA battery pack and an external antenna. Works well enough although the low battery indicator comes on after 2 or 3 transmissions, doesn't mean you have to change them right away but it is something to keep in mind. For winter flying I have to keep the radio in my coat or the cold zaps the batteries to the point it will not transmit.

          Re: Portable Radio

The battery pack is designed for the 1.5 volt alkaline batteries. If you use the 1.2 volt rechargeable batteries, you are starting out with lower voltage and could account for the behavior you describe.

              Re: Portable Radio

Marc: I primarily use the icom a-6, I do have a vertex 210 that I carry for a backup as well. I prefer the icom because the vertex has a terrible feedback which makes communication extremely difficult. I have given thought to using a 12 volt battery but have not done so yet, I pack a minium of six extra AA's in my flight bag. As Jerry also indicated, rechargables do not work very well, they seem to drain extremely fast. There are numerous very good threads regarding the installation of 12 volt systems as well as the usage of modified D cell battery packs as well buried within this forum. You could probably do a search on "radios" or "motorcycle battery" to come up with some of this info.

                  Re: Portable Radio

I can look around. They are the kind of thing you want to keep away from small children. I don't want to get arrested for showing disgusting images to them. It might even be illegal!
Actually, the color of the whole plane was a perfect match for International Harvester Tractor Orange with Forest Green leading edges and a stripe down the side in the same green. There were also Forest Green N numbers. It was just REALLY disgusting, especially where the paint was "chalked" and had that rustic "dusty" look. At that time it actually had a sheet of plywood for a panel and a neat headliner with mildew spots all over it. I took the carpet out because the holes kept catching on my shoes and cut new wood floorboards for it (the HIGHLIGHT of the interior).
The nice things are it flys GREAT! Handling is wonderful, she's FAST, climbs quick and the engine doesn't use any oil or leak. The ultimate good thing was when two FAA guys are looking out the restaurant window at it to overhear them saying, "Yea we ought to ramp check THAT one, but I'M NOT GOING TO TOUCH IT!".

OK, the FAA thing didn't really happen. There WERE two times when perfect strangers told me it was the ugliest plane they ever saw. Seems like MANY years ago this group voted it the ugliest Taylorcraft in the world. I only lost to the derelict one with the tree growing through it.
