  • Help Needed

I am trying to fill out an FAA form for a 337. They want to know the regs the airplane is certified under. The plane is a 1946 BC12D. Is it CAR 3?

I have looked the TCDS over and can't find it. Help, please!

CAR 3 was around 1949, and CAR 4 started around 1939, so I lean toward CAR 4 for 1946, why are they asking such a question?, they have access to the answer??, gary

It is CAR 4, and who is they and why do they not know where to find certification on the TCDS sheet?

        Re: Help Needed

        Thanks Mike!

I am trying to fill out a form titled "Recommended Field Approval Application" that I obtained from the Portland FSDO. It is kind of like a practice 337 form. You send this in instead of the actual 337. Then they critique your mod and offer suggestions for improvements. That way when you submit the actual 337 it is the way they want it.

The "they" who did know where to look on the TCDS is ME! If someone can tell me where to look on there, I would really like to know. I spent a fair amount of time searching for it and never saw ANYTHING referencing the certification basis.

        Thanks for the help everyone!

          FOUND IT!!!!

Thanks Mike, for prodding me into a more thorough search. It is right there on page 9, "Specifications Pertinent to all Models".

          Thanks again!

            Re: Help Needed

It might be a mute point but several people have informed me that you no longer send 337's back to the FSDO, they now go direct to Mike Monroney Records Department which is assinine if you aske me.

The guy at the Portland FSDO wants it sent there. I am under the impression he is the one that will approve or disapprove it.

                Re: Help Needed

If the 337 is documenting an STC or alteration/repair that is supported with FAA "approved data", the 337 is sent directly to OKC. If the 337 is for a field approval, i.e. there is no supporting "approved data", it goes to the local FSDO for pre-approval. It is then returned to you, and if pre-approved, the alteration or repair can be made, the 337 completed (signed by the IA) and the 337 forwarded to OKC.

I knew there was a change, but I have not read the notice myself yet.

Wow!! This thread has really gotten interesting.

I am trying to replace the fabric over my wing tanks with sheet aluminum. I was told I have to fill out a 337 form. Prior to that, I am supposed to fill out this 7 page document titled "Recommended Field Approval Application".

If they like what they see on that application, then I fill out a 337 form. I spoke with a guy on the phone from the Portland FSDO. He talked about what HE would and would not approve. So I thought that meant HE was the one doing the approval.

At this point I think the FAA could make a yoyo sound complicated.

                        Define "APPROVED"

I have a photo copy of 337 where what I am trying to do was approved. Does that constitute "approved data". The guy at the FSDO told me that just because I had it didn't mean he would approve me doing the same thing.

The IA that I am using is very old and not familiar with small airplane stuff. He retired from the airlines. He is a very nice fellow, but he would not be my first choice. I can't find another IA. If anyone knows of one in SW Washington state, just north of Portland, please let me know.

                        Thanks!

I have a feeling it will be easier to put the fabric on top of the wing, than if will be to get a FAA guy to sign your 337, just my thoughts, gary

                            Richard:

Form 337's dated prior to October 1, 1955 are "approved data", reference FAA Airworthiness Inspectors Handbook 8300.0, vol 2, chapter 1, 5(4)(6). 337's after that date can be used as supporting data but are not considered " approved data".

I guess that explains why the guy at the Portland FSDO has to approve it before I can send it to OKC. The 337 I have is from last year. That explains why he told me HE had to approve my mod.

                              Thanks everyone!
