  • Rigging Question

My T-Craft requires a slight amount of right rudder in normal cruise. It is neutral in a power off glide. There is no tendancy for a wing to drop flying solo. Is this normal? IF not, what is the best way to adjust?

Add a rudder tab is one way to fix it.

      Re: Rigging Question

Tighten the upper and lower right side engine mount bolts about two turns, and loosen the left side ones two turns.

Make sure that all the Cotter pins go back in correctly. Make sure your engine mount rubber pieces are not cracked or worn out. Make sure all the baffling still seals correctly. Make sure the air filter does not rub on the edge of the lower cowl.

Take this opportunity to make a full inspection of everything "under the hood", that it does not cause any chafing or interference, or that something attached properly is not too tight or too loose because of this.

You're aiming for about a one degree change in engine thrust to the right. Very minor. But it did work on my Taylorcraft the same way it worked on my Flying Aces Moth, my Sig Mini-Maxer, my Senior Telemaster, my Astro-Hog...

The answer comes because you are not having any turning tendency with power off. that shows that it is not so much an airframe rigging problem as it is a thrust line problem. If the plane turned with power on or power off, then would have been is an issue for airframe rigging.

Thanks Bill -- will try that.
BTW, I'd mentioned I got my private check ride from Hank Coffin at Whitman in 1956.
I had heard he was a WW1 ace. I did a web search and found a bio at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0168920/. Turns out he was born a bit late for that, but he played one in Howard Hugh's 1930 Hells Angels film.

              Re: Rigging Question

My L-2b required a little Rudder trim and I didn't want to add an ugly tab, so I took up a link in the tailwheel chain on one side and added it to the other side and VOILA it flies hands and feet off straight as an arrow.
