  • Need Brake/Wheel Parts-I screwed up

1941 BC12-65, I screwed up. We were doing the annual today. Had cleaned and repacked the wheel bearings. Anyway, when trying to replace the wheels we had to jack up the landing gear some more. Any way, when I started up with the left side the other landing gear slipped off of the blocks, then my side slipped off the jack. So both came down directly on the brakeshield assembly. Landing gear and axle are all alright, but the brake linings, brake shields, shoe adjusting bolts/wedges and possibly the anchor plate assembly are all toast. SOOO--, does anyone have any used parts stashed away or does anyone know any supplier that has the parts? Forrest, you got any hid away? Also, is there another option for putting on some other type of brake that is better? If so, now would be a good time since mine are toast. Thank you for any help.

    Ouch that hurt, Randy.

All is not lost for parts, however. Try emailing Donna Losey [email protected] (she's a star)
or phone Skybound in Atlanta, Georgia 770-446-6797

And no, you don't need any bigger brakes for your BC12-65...when you get them fixed & set up right, they'll serve you fine. My own reference here.(300kb pdf)

Good luck, and don't get too despondent by a little upset.

      Thanks Robert
And thanks for the reference, pictures are great. You hit the nail on the head. This was my first annual for my t-craft(bought her last May). She was passing with flying colors which made me happy since you always wonder if you missed anything when buying. So I was somewhat dejected when this happened. But in times like this I always remember some words of my father: "if this is the worst thing that ever happens to you, then you are going to be alright". Might sound strange to a non-southerner American, but it is sound advice to me. Again thanks for the reference, I'll be on the telephone Monday morning.

Anyone else know of brake parts sources, or anyone have old ones laying around?

I'm going to sound like a broken record here but, DON'T throw away the bashed up parts! Even the worst damaged parts may be useful as paterns.

Probably all of us have had an "experience" while working on wheels/brakes. I recently took an old car jack and welded a piece of 1/4" steel to the lift portion that I had cut a curved cutout on the top. This part slides under the axle and provides a firm base for working on the gear. I also welded side supports to the base of the jack for stability. I've never taken off both wheels at the same time (other than now while doing a complete rebuild).

Re: Need Brake/Wheel Parts-I screwed up

Thanks for all the replies. Will be contacting the sources that Rob Lee gave first. Thanks for your help Rob.
Got the damaged brakes off today and assessed the damage. Looks like mainly the dust cover/shield assembly, rt. plate assembly/anchor and shoe adjusting wedge and bolt. I will start looking for these tomorrow. I'm hoping they are not too hard to find. I'm not familar with this process. Are the shinn brakes more or less universal among the different airplanes they were used in, or are the parts (like the dust shields) unique to the taylorcraft? Does anyone know? Will the dust shields be hard to find?
                Thanks

                    Randy,
I think you'll find that Rob is right on......call Donna Losey. The folks there are very helpful and almost certainly have everything you need. I used them recently for some brake parts and they were very reasonable.

I'm going to call them this week myself. I have an extra set of wheels and plan on putting new linings on them and 8X6 tires for off airport use. I pretty much use Rob's excellent brake info as my Bible on the subject and have been able to greatly enhance my braking effectiveness.

Thanks for the information. I'll go back to the airplane thursday and look over again exactly what I need andgive him a call. After the initial shock, I looked more closely and may need only a few parts. I'll give a call when I know what I need.
