  • lower jury strut mounting strap question

On the rear of my lower jury strut strap mounts I notice that they can slide on the lift strut about a 0.50" either side of center with little force. Is this normal or should I fabricate new straps that are tighter?

I have seen a few people that have a piece of rubber between the strap and the strut. It works really well.

More than likely a homemade strap now. If it is tight on the strut, make a new one that fits better, it should but up to the jury strut.

the jury strut clamps do not have to fit tight to the strut. Use wraps of Industrial white tape, usually about 3/4 wide and usually takes about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 wraps....

Electricians tape conveniently comes in a wide range of colours, some very similar to the colour charts of certain paint manufacturers.

3M "Microfoam" tape is very thin but provides some cushion. Mine has this tape installed on the inside of the strap, then razor trimmed flush with the edges of the strap. When installed, you can hardly see that there is anything there.

I've used a product called "Stone guard" from a body shop. It's a heavy clear plastic material, nearly invisible when in place.

                  DJ,

I might have missed the post, but I take it she got home alright??? My former BC-12D had a couple wraps of white tape around the strut. Have fun!!!

Indeed she did! Jason Gerard made the trip from Indiana to Arizona in about 4 days and 25 flight hours. Took her up this morning for about 30 minutes and 5 touch and go's. She's got a few squawks but nothing major.

Do not use PLASTIC tape, ( the black electric type) I have seen rust under it rot right through the strut I think I'll have another BEER , make some big decisions, watch The Unit and go to bed!!

Forrest... what is "Industrial" white tape? is it a cloth based tape?

Yes cloth based, I could not find my roll today . Very porous and wider than the jury clamps.

I have an idea... what do you guys think about using the rubber channel from an Adel clamp on the jury strut clamps?? It should not hold water or cause corrosion, but it will also cushion the clamp.

If the clamps,& struts are held to a tight dimension this could work. The tape allowed for varience upon assembly , we used at least 1 1/2 wraps, thick on bottom or up to 3 1/2 to take up varience.... Then the touch up guy used strut color on the tape with a brush, looked good for a while.
