  • 40 bl65 engine mount question

I am wondering if anyone has info on engine mount details for the lycoming.
I have ordered the airframe parts manual , but wondered if anyone with one of these knows if there is any rubber bushing between the mount and the engine, my project has the engine directly bolted to the mount. This is strange, but it looks like it has been this way, any info would be apreciated.

    Hi Jack,

My '39 BL-65, converted from a BL-50, had a rubber bushing (looked like a washer about 1" dia. and 1/4" to 3/8" thick) between the mount & engine.

Ironically I recall it also had thin rubber washers between the mount and the fuselage.

There should be a rubber washer between the engine and the mount, and on the top side of the engine lug. Then a large area steel washer. There should also be a rubber tube or plastic type sleeve around the bolt where it goes through the engine lug. I don't think there should be anything between the mount and airframe. Tom

original rubber between mount & fuselage was a bad idea, bolt that solid. Other is correct

Forrest, is the rubber between the mount and fuselage bad on all Taylorcrafts or was that a Lyc or 39 problem? I had metal spacer washers between the fuselage and mount of both of my planes. Is that OK?

Forrest is far more knowledgable than me but I would say that it isn't correct.

Forrest, I seem to rember a Micarta shim about 1/4 " thick and perhaps 1X2 inches in between the motor and the mount on the O-145 Lyc. Am I dreaming or was that used?

                  Hi Forrest,

Was the rubber between the mount and fuselage a factory installation or something that a previous owner may have put in?

I am 99% sure mine had it just not sure how it got there.

                  Thanks, Dave.

Re: 40 bl65 engine mount question

In the beginning, (hmmm that has a familiar ring), the first Model A's had only the rear mount bolts going back into a threaded insert that was placed into the fuselage. Seemed they had to remove them about every 200 hrs for work on engine, this quickly evolved into a bolt with nut on the outside like we do today! I do not recall any A with rubber there. I do recall other types of shims on different ships but nothing by the factory. Then I recall square rubber mounts between the engine & mount of the Franklin or Lycoming. Next week I will check the drawings and see what they say!
