Is the grey similar to Lycoming grey?

When did Continental introduce "Continental gold"?

        Re: continental engine colors

I think the Continental gray was a little lighter. Somebody told me that it is simular to machine gray but I am not sure. I am using Lycoming gray on the crankcase I am assembeling now. I think they started using Continental or Oldsmobile gold when they introduced the C 90 or o-200.

Continental gray is darker than Lycoming gray. I use Lycoming gray because it is easy to get. Gold was not used until the late C-90's or O-200's. The machinery gray you get today is nowhere close to the old machinery gray which was pretty dark.

I believe the correct color for the crankcase is Randolph No. 301 continental blue/gray. It is a very dark color and looks original with black cylinders.

                  Re: continental engine colors

I checked and Randolph does not supply the No. 301 Continental Blue-Gray paint anymore. I have some left from when I painted my engine several years ago. I called Norm Douthit of Norm Aero who is a distributer of Poly-fiber and now Randolph paints. He said he could mix some of the Blue-Gray paint if I would send a sample. If anyone is interested I can send a sample to Norm and he could supply the paint.Just let me know. By the way Norm's phone No. is 1-888-811-2232 - I think he was with Ray Stits from the beginning and is probably the best at giving advice about Poly Fiber if anyone has questions or problems about using Poly Fiber paints and fabric.

Norm Douthit is DEFINITELY "the man" when it comes to Stits covering.

Anything he don't know... don't belong in your covering system!

His prices are very good, better than elsewhere, and he is very willing to help solve covering problems over the phone. An excellent source!

I don't know them personally, but two folks named Jim and Dondi Miller have the same stellar reputation as best as I know.
