    Re: Eiseman Magnetos

Fresno sells the "Ercoupe" cup that DaveWhitaker is refering too.
The re thread is pretty straight forward we have done it a lot in the past.

      Re: Eiseman Magnetos

I have decided to buy Slick Magnetos,, the kit will end up costing $1043 including rebates and spark plugs. I will work with a local mechanic who recently did the conversion on a local BC12D,, we will put the Bumps on the cowling,, we will replace the left top half of the cowling as part of the project.I have been flying this T-craft.. my previous last flight was in NC29891 Nov.17,1943..I logged 39 hours in BCs as a Navy cadet.

The last time I bought a Slick conversion I bought it from Mattituck they were the cheapest. The price was over $100 less than Spruce. Tom

          Re: Eiseman Magnetos

Now that I recieved the Slick conversion package, my Mechanic who works with me decided to go on two weeks vacation. I normally do my maintenance, but because of his prior experience on a local BC12D I decided to let him run the project. The Eiseman core mags have to be returned to Spruce Aircraft within 30 days for the $300 rebate, which should be ok, but being eager I thought I would remove the Eisemanns now. Here is my question, the Eisemans are close to the firewall,do I have to remove the caps to get drive gear free of the engine? Or can I just remove the mounting nuts and the mags including the wires will come free?

            Re: Eiseman Magnetos

I did the same conversion on my 1948 Taylorcraft, I went from the Bendix sf-4 mags to slicks. I always pulled the back covers off the mags to remove and install them to keep from scratching up the fire wall. It is a very close fit and for me it was easier to install and time them with the rear covers removed.

The only problem with cowl bumps is there are too many ugly ones out there. Most are way too big for the Taylorcraft, so I made my own out of aluminium. They are about 13/4" high in the front tapering down to 1/2" at the rear, and are about 8" long. I used the unison plugs that came with the magnetos for the lower plugs and the new champion low profile plugs on the top for clearance. Sorry I don't have any pictures to post.

I ordered my mags from Wag Aero, not because they are the cheapest but when I lived in Minnesota I usually got my orders in under 24 hrs. I also sent in my old mags and harness and got a rebate on both.

              Re: Eiseman Magnetos

Eisemann mags have a large cup, I am not sure what is inside the cup other than wires.. Do you have a shielded P-lead? I am making this conversion to get rid of radio noise. If I can't get short bumps I may do the same as you. my son manufactures sailboats, fiberglass might be a good approach, wander what the FAA would say about that.

                Walter

Sorry to hear that you have to install the cowl bumps. But if you must, at least make sure the one on the left side is far enough forward. The nosebowl on my plane almost covers the front left plug.

I still haven't fixed my leaky wing tanks. I just don't use them.

                  Re: Eiseman Magnetos

When I did mine, I removed the mag and the wires as a unit. The drive gear will come out at the same time. It is a snug fit between the firewall, but there was enough wiggle room to do it. On the new Slick mag the wires will be installed after the mags are bolted on. There is plenty of extra wire on those leads, so you will need to be careful how you route them.

I have a piece of shielded P-lead, but have not installed it yet. Just too lazy I guess. Would rather go flying than lay under the dash upside down connecting to the back of the switch.

No cowl bumps needed if you use shielding cups...

                    Re: Eiseman Magnetos

On my 48 Tcraft my "P" leads are just good quality wire with no extra shielding. I never did have any ignition noise on my radio even with the old mags and unshielded plugs. I am using a kx99 radio with a whip antenna in the r/h wing root fairing.

I hated to go with the cowl bumps but even with the old plugs the nose bowl and cowling just cleared the l/h fwd plug. When I installed the new shielded plugs I had to trim the nose bowl to clear that l/h fwd plug. I made my "speed" bumps as small and unobtrusive as possible.

The slick magneto kit for the A-65 is pretty complete, wire clamps and drive gears included. When I sent my old mags in for the rebate I pulled and kept the old drive gears.
