    Re: Eiseman Magnetos

I used to have a 41 T-craft with Eiseman Mags with no shielded harness and used an Icom A-22 and never had any radio noise problems. And I was based at a towered airport and flew over 120 hrs a year. I don't know if you realy gain a lot by going to a shielded harness.

IMHO, if you can manage to NOT cut the cowl and put in the bumps, you're better off. There is a really nice T-craft here on the field with the original spark plug cups and it sure looks good!

        Re: Eiseman Magnetos

Thank you Bill. It was important to me to retain the original look of the cowling. That is why I went to the effort to modify the cups to be able to do so.

Taylorcraft used to have cups, I believe Forrest still has an original one. If he does, I will try to post a picture for historical referance. But alas, no one is manufacturing new ones. However, the ones that come from Fresno, which I believe are an Ercoupe part, can be modified as I described.

Just for a point of clarification, I did put new Slick mags on. Very happy with them so far. It is my understanding that the industry standard shielded harness thread is 5/8-24. So if a person was going to use a modern shielded harness either with new Slick mags or with a rebuilt Eisemann, he would need to modify the cups as I described.

I know many have cut cowls and put on the bumps. That is OK if it does not bother them. I just needed to, for my own satisfaction, to have the look that C. G. Taylor was going for.

          Re: Eiseman Magnetos

I heard somewhere that you could snip off the shielded plug wire ends and solder on non-shielded ends. Then just use the old C26 or M41's. True?

I suppose there would be some radio interference. Has anyone tried this? Does it really work? How bad is the interference?

If I buy shielded wires from Skytronics, is it a problem assemblying the wires into the Eiseman M-4 magneto covers? I would like to feel comfortable about that part of the project. Anyone have that experience?

              Bob,
I have Bendix SF4,s and C26 plugs in my plane. You can hear the ignition noise but it doesn,t affect the quality of communications. I made my harness using 7MM Packard cable. All shielded harness use this style cable, except Slick, so you should be able to strip back the shield and install the AN or Rajah style ends. I wouldn,t try the Slick harness as it uses a spiral wound conductor.

                Re: Eiseman Magnetos

I have shielded on the bottom and m41 plugs on the top.
I used the skytronics wiring with bendix mags.
I cut the ends off and soldered the unshielded clips to the wiring.
Yes i pick up some noise when using a Icom A5 radio.
If I'm far out I turn off the top mag. The shieded plugs on the bottom sure get rid of the noise.
With both mags on, I can talk and hear 10 to 15 miles out. any more than that I shut the top mag off.

Great info! But it sounds like I cannot convert my Slick wires to unshielded ends. Has anyone tried it?
It would be great to get rid of those cowl bumps.

Just unsightly, nothing having to do with the engine or airframe.

I just talked to Fresno Airparts, they sell parts for Eisemann Magnetos.. They informed me that Eisemann M-4 magnetos cannot be shielded for radio noise. You have to convert to LA-4 or go to bendix or Slick Mags..Looks like a $1300 cost for the Slick conversion from Aircraft Spruce and $50 for cowl bumps from Wag Aero. What do you guys think...my M-4 mags were rebuilt about 150 hours ago..The noise is liveable... but a nuisense

When I had the M-4s, using the ANL switch on my ICOM, and putting the internal (external) antenna behind the bagage compartment solved the noise problem. Don't know what radio you have, but if it doesn't have "automatic noise limiting" capabilities, you might consider spending less money on a new radio, and keeping the correct mags.

I have an Icom A-200 transciever, panel mounted. the antenna is mounted on the fairing between the wing and the fuslage. There is another T-craft on the field here in Venice FL. He just converted to Slick Mags. $1200 plus labor.

                                George,

If I can make it to Big Foot, it'll be on Saturday. Sunday I'm hoping to go to the Rio, WI breakfast. Neither one may work out for me, but that's what I'm thinking about for now. Keep an eye out for me if you go Saturday.
