Re: New Crispy Pics in Gallery...

Bob, I just took a quick look through my Polyfiber manual, and can't see anywhere that they say it's ok... could you point me to where you found that?
It does specifically say "if you skip the Poly-Spray and rely on UV blocked topcoat paint, the fabric will deteriorate pretty fast."

Maybe the NEW manual??? I understand that the guy who owns everything (Ron Alexander??) has rewritten the whole Ray Stits manual recently.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong or misunderstanding it.

Appendix A: Ultralight and Very Light Aircraft, p. 92, "If you can live with a silver plane skip the three cross-coats of Poly Spray and use three coats of Poly Tone 220M Nevada Silver or PolyTone 222M Rancho Silver top coat paint."

Maybe that just applies to Ultralights and the T-Craft is not considered either "Ultralight" or "Very Light" but only "Light" so it wouldn't work. I dunno.

What is the function of the three coats of PolySpray? Just UV protection? Wouldn't three coats of silver topcoat do the same thing...cheaper and lighter?

I believe the old timers would often cover through silver and then skip the topcoats to make their planes lighter and save $$$. Was there a problem with strength or life with that system?

Not saying it's a good idea...just asking questions.

Help, someone. I really like the cheaper and lighter idea, but I don't want to skip the three coats of PolySpray on my silver wings only to have the fabric fall off at some future date!

The way I read it is that appendix A is for Ultralights and very light aircraft... that would not apply to the Tcraft... but I'd say call Polyfiber and ask THEM! Talk to Jon Goldenbaum...he's the one that wrote the manual. He's a very knowledgable man, and everytime I've dealt with him, a very easy person to talk to and extremely helpful and friendly. I'd be interested in his angle on this!

The Polyspray is the only one that will sand worth a hoot to get that nice smooth finish. Tom
