I saw it. That's why I suggest gray as an additional trim color if you want to jazz it up a little and still keep everything you've done. Ever see a Pitts or citabria with the matching color checkerboard on the tail? Really sharp!

Grey with red as acsent trim.
Just what red fades so bad.
Grey interior with red stripes in the seats.
Grey Arrows on the fuselage with red in it or "light red overspray fade effect "with metal flakes over the grey.
Just some thing I like seen and and liked in and on a restord car .

You're right Len. The best looking house in our county is barn red with grey trim. Beautiful! OK, it's a house not a T-craft...I'm just saying the colors work together.

I really like Bill's coloring book idea. Some time back I saw some drawings of a blank (no color) T-craft (in the Taylorcraft newsletter?) Is there some way to scan those drawings into the "Paint" program on the computer and then use it to experiment with colors? My computer skills are not up to the task, but perhaps some bright fellow can show the way?

I found a plain drawing of a t-craft for color testing on dedreckon.com(I think that's the site). That's what I used and I colored about 50 of them and this is the one my father seemed to like the best.

Here's the one from my Taylorcraft gallery. This is exactly what we made it for......it's actually right out of the newsletter, but we blew it up a little and removed some superfluous lines to make it a little cleaner. Feel free to copy and use it. You CAN export it into Windows Paint.

It would seem sticking to light colors on top would be advisable, to reflect sun = Mike

Thanks for the blank Taylorcraft drawing. I'm going to use it to experiment with colors. If I come up with anything clever I'll post it here!

Yes, light color on top makes sense. For reflecting sunlight, but also I've noticed that a dark color on the top of the fuselage, light on the bottom looks somehow unbalanced and disturbing.

Many classic planes use silver wings with a dark color fuselage. Verrrry nice indeed. And, I believe silver is the lowest cost, and lightest weight color you can use.

The silver, unless it's something like unfinished polyspray, or the aluminum pigmented dope, is also usually the least durable of all colors. The reason being that to mix silver, you take a clear base, then add silver flake, and just a drop of black....therefore, it's got about the least "binder" of any of the colors, yet has lots of metal flake. White is usually the cheapest and best bang for the buck, but titanium dioxide took a huge jump in price a few years ago, thanks to the EPA so the wide margin that used to be there isn't so prominent anymore.
I just checked on AFS's site, and by the gallon the 2 part polyurethane is as follows:
White, $242.91, black $214.41, silver $315.69. Something to ponder.
Alot of the guys around here and up North, like their leading edges a more heat absorbent color, so they're defrosted first in the mornings (like today.. 23 degrees at 6am here in MT). DuPont put out a very informative graph on solar energy absorbtion, and the colors rank as follows, starting with the highest absorbtion rate.... black, green, red, orange, light blue, yellow, and finally white. It was interesting to me, as I never worried about green being high on that scale, but it shows it to be higher than red.

Re: New Crispy Pics in Gallery...

I think the weight and cost savings of a silver topcoat results, not from the cost of the paint, but from elimination of the three cross coats of PolySpray underneath the topcoat.

My calculations indicate if you paint wings and horizontal tail surfaces with 3 coats of Nevada Silver you could eliminate 6 gallons of PolySpray in the paint schedule saving $400 and what? 15 lbs? More?

It seems to be allowed in the PolyFiber manual.

Am I wrong about this? Someone please correct me before I order a pallet of silver paint!

I don't think I would want to do away with the three cross coats of Poly Spray, but the top coat of Nevada Silver does not take much to cover. My old BL that is on the front page of taylorcraft.org had the Nevada Silver Poly Tone over the Poly Spray. I had lots of retarder mixed in to get a good gloss, and kept marbles in the paint cup to try and keep the metal flake mixed up. The finish silver is hard to spray and not have stripes when done. I jut had to patch fabric that was Nevada Silver topcoat. It is very difficult to match, and you can see the difference. A professional painter might have done better of course, but that costs even more money. Gtting the flakes in new silver to look the same as the flakes in the old silver is a pain. So Nevada Silver in my opinion is not the easiest to patch.
