  • trim indicator

I am about ready to start putting in the headliner on the 1941 BC-12D project I am working on but have a question on how the nose up and down indicator is suppose to work. I just have the pulley and the crank assembly with a threaded stud about 2 inches long sticking up above the pulley and no way for it to move the indicator lever. What am I missing? If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

You might open this link http://www.taylorcraft.org.uk/trim-pulley-fwd.jpg

This second link should take you to Rob Lees's main site...look under page 2 of the G-BREY restoration. He has done a marvelous job of recording his rebuild project. http://www.taylorcraft.org.uk/index.htm

...then send your thanks to Rob Lees!! Maybe this sketch will indicate how it operates. Dick

I had an indicator but don't recall ever using it. Part of the pre-flight was to level the horizontal stab and see that the tab was in line. I'd adjust trim in flight, and adjust for attitude on downwind after the numbers. Don't recall any violent pitch-up if I had to do a go-around. What's been your experience? - Mike

            Re: trim indicator

Unless the indicator was installed before cover, it is almost impossible to install after. Not sure, but I think indicators came out after '46.

              Re: trim indicator

Some if not all '41 Deluxes had trim position indicators. A small painted aluminum plate was attached to the wood piece under the front edge of the headliner, and was marked UP and DOWN. A wire pointer in front of the plate moved accordingly as the trim crank was turned.

                Re: trim indicator

My 45 has the trim indicator and when I pulled the old headlinner from the "41 Deluxe" the front wood piece had the screw holes showing it had one at one time. I am seriously thinking about putting one back in if anybody has the parts and is sick of fiddling with it. The one in the 45 seems to stick and stop working with great regularity. Put a zipper or access cover next to it in the headlinner. Seems like the little mechanism likes to get bound up. The trim still works, but continuing to turn the crank it really bends things up. Pretty easy to fix if you can get to it.

Yes, you are exactly right, now i'm trying to figure out what I need on the threaded bolt to move the wire pointer.

                    Re: trim indicator

When I was working on my trim system, someone sent me this image. I hope it helps. Robert Lees suggested using violin rosin on the cable. This helped since a slipping cable will get the stops on the cable offsync with the indicator. I fixed mine from the side zippers on the headliner without being able to see it. Lots of fun. If the cable slips, the indicator part on the top of the pully will run off the end of the threads.

NOW I GET IT, Thank you very much for the picture of the trim. I can make a short piece of tab out of aluminum like that.

Yes it will run off the threads and will cause much frustration. If someone is shopping for a T-craft and happened to come across someone trying to fix this problem they could probably get a great buy!

                          Re: trim indicator

I've searched the archives here in vain, so I want to bring back up FunkyMonkey's question from 3/06:

Did the factory make some 1946 BC12-Ds without the trim position indicator?

My May 1946 ship doesn't have one either, but it may have been removed over the years. I'm fine with just counting crank revolutions and visually checking that the trim tab's neutral during my pre-flight inspection. But with my fussy restoration striving for authenticity, I'm fretting that I'm missing a required trim indicator. Not losing sleep over this, mind you, but the question is nagging at me.

                              Mark,
I am working on installing a trim indiactor for an F19 as part of a restoration and thought some more pictures might help. It had the markings on the plastic headliner but I am installing a skylight so I made a plate like my 41 that screws to the front former. The packard is just a picture of one and I will make a better one and print it on some better paper and can e-mail a picture if you need one. Also I have a better handle that I am going to use and can let you know where to find one if you need that too-just send me a PM if I can help.
