Re: How would you approach this engine???

He just mentioned he wanted to get it running. If it was mine, I would rip it apart, but I am a mechanic and have a hanger full of parts so it would cost me very little. There are many other things to consider after it is running. Is the hours known on it?

      No question.
However, before that happens, we need to get it into shape so an A&P can do a compression check and whatever else magic he does.- Mike

Re: How would you approach this engine???

I've read this thread, and this my thoughts. Pull all 4 cylinders. Rings and gaskets don't cost that much. Maybe pull a rod as well. Now you can inspect most everything except the accessory housing, and its contents. Look at the cam and followers for condition. Check the dimensions on the removed rod. Look at and measure the cylinder bores, pull the valves and check them. If everything looks good hone the cylinders install the new rings and put it back together. If you find a problem with anything, fix it and be thankful that you didn't wreck an airplane because you wanted to save a few dollars on a bad engine. Tom

How would I approach that engine? I would approach it carefully from the rear and grab it right behind the ears.

              "lunkheads"?

              "foolhearty amateur abuse"?

"tinkering with something critical that you don't understand"?

I hope we're not going to start that crap here. Seems to me that Mike had a reasonable, legitimate question. One we could all learn from.

And even if his question were unreasonable and illegitimate he still deserves to be treated in a respectful, polite manner.

There are those who surface on this forum who criticize and belittle thus enabling them to show off at the expense of others. There is no place here for arrogance. I would never let someone like that near my airplane. Terry Bowden's responses are alway helpful, and I usually copy them for future reference. An additional response in this instance might be, "Be sure also to get a qualified mechanic to check the engine," not a pile of unproductive sarcasm. Mike ALWAYS raises thought provoking questions, and I am always pleased to see a new posting from him and to learn from the helpful responses he elicits from the forum.

Flyguy hope everything turns out for the best for you. It takes a real man to admit he made a mistake.

Anyway I'd love to hear how the engine start up project goes with pics ??

Don't know what the pics would show except me spritzing Liquid Wrench over everything that moved (oops, got the dog). I"ll follow the steps suggested earlier, including gently tapping the valve stems; i'll install a second grounding wire for the mags, just in case. - Mike

I changed the oil, using Aeroshell 15W50.
I removed and cleaned the screen in a clean glass jar and replaced the screen.
I allowed the sediment in the jar to settle and looked for big lumps; nothing seen.
I disconnected the ignition leads from all plugs and removed the upper plugs; poring about 1/8 C of MMO in each cylinder.
Put on gloves and spun the engine for about :05.
                            Drank coffee for :15
Put on gloves and spun the engine for about :05.
                            Replaced plugs.
By feel, the compression had come up to what I'd expect.
Thanks to all for their suggestions - MIke
