  • f-19 drum brake question

I currently have a 1976 F 19 that has drum brakes pads have very little wear, my problem is the brakes are adjusted up as far as they can go and I still have about 10% breaking my mechanic as well as my self . believe that the drum is wore out and needs to be replaced, to my knowledge there still original called taylorcraft three times , and they said they would get back to us with specs on drum thickness but still haven't heard anything?

Does anyone happen to know what the minimum spec is for drum thickness or what they are new?

My mechanic has called everybody , and nobody seems to have that information.

    Thank you,

    Are they Clevelands, Shawn?

They are mechanical Cleavelands. Later Aeronca Champs also used them. Linings should still be available.

I have the mechanical Clevelands and relined them as part of my rebuild. Once that was done they hardly fit back in the drum! There is also a metal insert in the shoe assembly where the cam contacts. Perhaps it is worn effectively limiting your travel??

Yes they are Cleveland's , and I have spoken with Cleveland , and they don't seem to know what the original drum thickness was when new, which is what I'm wondering . so I have something to compare my drums to.

My mechanics fix was to reverse the pads , because as most of you are aware . if I remember correctly , the top edge of the pad seems to wear down before anything else . so by reversing them . I have gained enough that I now have my brakes back,

But still was like to know the original thickness of the drum . when new so I can compare that to what I have,

            I really appreciate everyone's help .

Shawn, I just put a tape on a new, unused Cleveland off an F-19...across the inside, from one new drum surface to the other, measured 5-13/32 inches. Dick
