  • RFP: shipping to Europe

This isn't going to be easy.

I'm requesting proposals for shipment of my airplane to Europe, and to be reassembled and signed-off by a certified FAA inspector.

BTL to LSGE or LSZG Switzerland would be ideal. I will take responsiblity for the importation, taxation and duties. The shipper shall take responsibility for packaging and containerizing the airplane.

I can arrange also for an (LCL) container.

Has Waco gotten the plane together? I have been watching the progress for a while. That has got to be one the nicest T-crafts I have ever seen.

I have been waiting to see it all together and take some pictures. The folks over there are getting tired of me I think. Good luck with the shipping.

Hi , mystery field , the WACO folks will get your other Schinn wheel this week!
We have shipped a few from here, I am sure they know how... Actually you can put 2 1/2 Taylorcrafts into one 40 ft container. Just shipped an airplane to Serbia.

              Re: RFP: shipping to Europe

John: you could ship it here and then re-aquaint yourself with its flying qualities en route CH. I am sure that there's an FAA person in the UK to sign it off...there's one just up the road, as it happens.

Prob is, CH is not in the EU, would that be a problem?

                Re: RFP: shipping to Europe

                Thanks Forrest and Rob

At WACO they have been shipping 1 plane per 40' container, with 4 wings per plane.

I think to ship in a 20' container the airplane must be dissassembled firewall forward.

That leaves me with the option of having the airplane crated and shipped Less Container Load, so I am especially interested in finding someone with experience crating and packing for LCL. I can handle the paperwork.

I had thought the UK was an obvious destination, especially as its much closer by Sea than Basel, an the prospect of the x-country to here is very appealing. I would need an approved sign off on the assembly.

Its a big project, and I need to understand my options at the outset. I have that creeping feeling that its almost Autumn again.

                Cheers

Yes we used the 20 ft one recently and it worked good, think of other things you might need over there. England sounds great! WE supplied the dual brake system for copy & I have really found a Vintage 1939 Shinn Wheel to replace the cracked one. shipping to WACO on Tues..

                    Re: RFP: shipping to Europe

                    Hi Forrest

We've got a farm operation in the family here, so I'm able to move fairly large things around with our own trucks and trailers ... but not all the way to/from the UK. If I pack a container with a bunch of goodies (which of course sounds like a good idea), then the destination must be Switzerland. Much much easier with regard to Customs as well.

Does a taylorcraft indeed fit a 20' container? The fuselage is 26' LOA. We've use a 28' van before and that worked pretty well.

What is the distance from the firewall to the rudder hinges?

                    Thanks again

                      Re: RFP: shipping to Europe

JCandlish, I have a bare frame in the back of the shop it measures 17'3.5" front to rear. I also have a clip wing here with a c90 on a short mount. It measure 20' from a plumb line dropped from the crankshaft to the floor to the rear of the tail wheel. So I would think with the rudder and tailwheel off, and a taper shaft engine you should be able to get it in a 20' container. Tom

                        Re: RFP: shipping to Europe

My "just-covered" fuselage measures 18 feet from the bottom of the firewall to the top of the fin, no rudder, no engine, in the 3-point attitude. The tape measure is pretty much horizontal.

                          Thanks Rob and Tom.

A 20' dry container is 19'5" on the inside.
