  • FOLO: The red oxide question

"doesn't matter if they used ZC or red oxide. after this time, if no rust on the surface then it obviously worked" - My A&P

Red oxide primer is rust-coloured. Visually, can you easily tell it's not rusting underneath?

I used to use red oxide primer on cars....it worked a treat, but then I wasn't having to comply with FAA regs, and I wasn't gluing fabric to them.

I specifically asked if using red oxide would cause him to squawk during an annual and he said 'no'. But you make an interesting point about gluing fabric to it. If I'm ever in the position to chose, I'll opt for 2-part epoxy, but until I'm down that deep .... . - Mike

Re: FOLO: The red oxide question

Hello: Just a historical note...my logbook for my '46 BC12-D contains an entry that it was recovered in 1958 after the fuselage was coated with "red lead". I am removing "green" coating from the fuselage now and finding light surface rust in dependent and aft surfaces. After sandblasting, I will coat it with a "white" 2 part epoxy just to see if rust breaks through! Doc
