  • Spray gun bargain

Now, I'm no spray gun expert, but I'm something of an expert on cheepo spray guns having bought and trashed 3 POS hardware store spray guns in 6 months. I was about to spring $300 for a "real" spray gun when I saw an ad on eBay for a new DeVilbiss gravity feed HVLP gun for $15.95. The little voice in my head is saying "forget it, a $16 spray gun's gotta be junk", but I figure it can't be any worse than the $50 crap guns I've been buying and throwing away, so I send in my $15.95 plus $6.95 shipping and a week later here it comes.

Today was perfect outdoor painting weather, 68 degrees, no wind. I drag out all my "needs a coat of primer" stuff, landing gear legs, cowl bumps, brake parts, etc. I mix up a batch of white epoxy, dump it into the gravity cup of my new $16 spray gun and go to work. I'm expecting the usual "can't quite get it adjusted right" blues, the skipping, sputtering, spitting frustration of working with a cheep gun. But WHOA! Instead, I dial the gun right into a perfect spray pattern, and I'm getting a silky smooth, effortless, beautiful coat. I get a big grin on my face and I tell myself, "I gotta tell those T-craft guys about this!"

Good gun, cheep. On eBay, search "spray guns" it'll come up first, it's sold by small engine warehouse.

    Bob
You got a real deal. I have been in the auto body repair and paint bis for thirty years. The shop i work in now i use a DeVilbiss HVLP gravity feed Sray gun. I think i paid 345.00 for it about 5 years ago. I also have 4 other DeVilbiss regular guns that ive had for over 20 years JGA-502s they work verry well but there not a HVLP. I painted my 76 pick up all with the HVLP

Doesn't there need to be some sort of drying thingie somewhere between the compressor and the nozzle? Obvioulsly that's not included, but I assume it's something one buys seperately? - Mike

The thingy is a water seperater it has a bowl with a filter in it and a pitcock on the bottom you can turn to drain it they work good. a must have item if your going to paint anything bigger than say a gear leg.

                    Don't you just love GOOGLE?
                    Here's a suggestion:
"Keep as much moisture out of the air on both the inward and the output
side of the compressor. After experimenting with many ideas, one of the
best turned out to be easy and cheap.

The commercial divers I worked with use a 4 to 6 inch diameter pipe that
is 6 to 9 inch long threaded on both ends. a Pipe cap is screwed onto
each end and the desired air fittings are drilled and tapped into each
                    pipe cap.

The inside is loosely filled with Kotex...! Each Kotex is already
wrapped with fine porous material but it is advisable to put wire
support screen inside of each end cap to keep the outlet free...

It works...! and the cap can be easily unscrewed to replace the Kotex
                    with new ..."

                      Hi Mike!
You can get this great filter on sale for about $50. Heck, I just spent more for a qt. of primer! I'm as practical as the next guy.... but, let's see.. length of 6" dia. pipe, threads, end caps, fittings, mounting brackets, plus a box of "filters", looks like the better half of 50 bucks to me. Keep a pipe wrench and a couple feet of teflon tape ready for those "filter" changes.
"Small economies don't pay" (except for the toilet paper filter). Be extravagant, change the filter easily, often, and for pennies! Get a water/oil free paint job like the pros.

I got one and to say I was disappointed was a understatement. The receipt says Devilbiss and that is the only thing that does. Taiwan is all mine says and what a piece of CRAP. Not worth $10.00.

Have you tried it yet? Mine came in yesterday but as I don't own a compressor (or a dryer-thingie, or an a/c for that matter ), it will sit a while, so I'm interested.- Mike
