Which compass do you need? The B16 for the cast mount? I have a bubble face with the top of instrument panel mount. I'm not real sure which airplanes they were used on. -
I have the cast mount that mounts to the windshield frame mount. I suppose then it is theB16 as you indicate. Really do not know. I recall growing up it had sort of a large compass mounted there but no matter the last owner put in an Airpath compass (dated 1981) that does not fit the mount without an additional piece of horizontal metal. Just a WW2 surplus B16 compass then. Should be fairly easy to come up with. I think they are fairly common.Comment

PB230011.JPG If you are going for an original; restoration you need to find a 46 advertising flyer with a photo. My 45 had the windshield tube union mount and a bubble face in an one piece dome and mount. Not sure when they switched to the later compass.Comment

Hank great picture! ayattached is me standing in front of the plane Circa 1970. Not a very god picture made worse with the scan. It LOOKS like it is in a housing I ca not be sure the way it was all painted however. It def is larger and not as streamlined as your...however what was in it then in 1970 may or may not have been accurate. I will look around at pictures of good restorations of 46s...perhaps Ryan or Scott can chime in. scan0001.pdfComment

compass 140306022169.jpg Yes, the weld job on that particular pylon was done by some six year old! I had to grind it down quite a bit and re-do a lot of it. It was one of the WORST welds I have ever seen. Looked like it was done by a six year old with wads of old bubble gum. Cleaned up nice though.

Thank you Tom. I just did a fast search on Barnstormers. None turned up but if as common as you suggest I should be able to find one. Makes sence that they started using WWII surplus in 46. I looked a a distant picture of Joel Sevenhous (sp) old plane ant it looked very similar. I know he was a stickler on originality no matter.Comment

Ever since I saw the first Taylorcraft, I have loved the original compass. I can't consider any Taylorcraft that doesn't have it. Anything may be missing or modified, but the compass cannot be missing !!!!Comment

Miguel, I agree the bubble glass compass is truly a thing of beauty. (Heck I even like a plane shinn mag wheel and consider it sacrilege to put a hub cap on them ot paint them) The 41 s and even the 45s to a degree are in my opinion the "bells of the ball " . That said it would not be original I do not believe now having spent my lunch hour researching to put one in a late March 46 build. I would be better off with a precision vertical Card compass mounted up there which is what I did with NC94984. The B16 WWII compass is a bit clunky for lack of a better term. It is however original... which is kinda a shame
