I spent $3600 for PolyFiber fabric and chemicals and did it myself + IA signoff + $$ for all those other things you want to do when the fabric is off! Bob

Make sure whoever does it uses Poly-Fiber (Stits). Better stuff because the coatings stick to the fabric better. Period.

I think the $3600 is probably close, and you can add another $4000 or so for labor.

Please consider doing it yourself with a local IA mechanic helping or watching over your shoulder. It is a great learning experience and the Ray Stits (or later Goldenbaum/Poly-Fiber) instruction manual is great. Ray Stits made a video too. Get all that stuff, practice on an elevator or aileron two or three times, and you should be good to go.

If you are quoted $4000 labor, make sure you have a schedule for completion. Recovering takes many hours of labor and many AI's take on fabric work as fill in work. It may take years to get completed.

I got 2 quotes to cover my J-3 Cub....1 was $15,000, the other $13,000. That was 2 different guys and did not include any additional work that may be necessary....be careful, some of these guys will run up one heck of a bill if you don't watch it. I have decided to do mine myself. But where do I start...I also have a 1940 BC-65 to do. Decisions...Decisions. Heck, I can propbably buy a nice T-Craft for $15,000 already done.

I asked an experienced Taylorcraft guy so I could get a ballpark idea. $14,000.00 to $15,000.00 with no other problems detected.

I thought $10,000-12,000 was the going rate,but I stopped by the super-flite booth at Oshlosh & they had a guy doing the demo's that was from Texas.I asked how much he got for doing fabric & paint on a cub or T-craft & about fell over when he said $28,000 & more if tubing work was needed.Things are always bigger in Texas I guess!

I met a guy at a fly-in with an absolutely beautiful cover/paint job, it looked like a new plane. I asked, if he didn’t mind my asking, what it cost to have it done. Needless to say, it took everything I had not to look totally shocked when he told me it cost

$30,000.

Now let me see, the BC12-D would sell for?? Guess he plans to fly it forever, because he will never get the value out otherwise.

I don't know...but my pocket book is glad of it and I have no plans to sell. If a guy is selling however, I see your point. I see people "Upgrading" to different planes...In my opinion we have the best there is.

I can quote an FBO; who once told me that, its not unusual to bill customers for paint curing time, so if it takes three hours to shoot dope on covered surface etc. as the process cures the clock runs. And the set up time and clean up time's are also inclusive. So one can see where this is going. And as an employer he bills one figure and pays labor as another figure. FBO's have considerable fixed costs which must be forwarded to the rate payer's.
It tickles the hell out of me that we're at time's encouraged to do this work one's self. "Pops" first Ag. Cub cost him $3000, you should see his face when I tell him they're hovering @$100,000!!!!!!!!

Sort of what I was expecting to hear (I'm not in the market). Guy was talking about buying my Tcraft and when he heard the wings had been done in '83, said it was time for a recovering. I was suprised, but politely didn't tell him what I thought. Then he came up with a 5 figure price to recover the beast, hence my question to the group. I was under the impression 3-4000 was the going rate - Mike

Well, One more comment. There is a guy here near Burlington, VT, who charges $10K for a ceconite job on Cubs, Champs, TCrafts etc. He says the materials cost him $3K, the rest is his labor. This includes bead blasting the tubing and epoxying the tubing. His rate is $40 for repairs. He's sent a lot of planes out for $10,000. He calls his product a "utility" job, meaning nothing fancy, just basic ceconite process. But they look ok. He supervised my covering one wing. My materials were about $650 for one wing.

Bless you guys, I just wish I could buy the products at USD prices, instead of £ prices...I guess about $20K has been spent just in parts on my project, and the majority of that is covering materials.
